Professional Development of Beginning Psychotherapists Trained in Gestalt Therapy, CBT and Psychodynamic Therapy

Abstract:

Disertační práce se zabývá tématem profesního vývoje začínajících psychoterapeutů. Současné výzkumy v oblasti profesního vývoje terapeutů potvrzují, že klíčovou roli hrají jak profesní tak osobní faktory terapeutů. Řada autorů však poukázala na nedostatek porozumění procesu jakým frekventanti výcviku a začínající terapeuti rozvíjí svoji expertnost. Cílem této disertační práce je proto detailní explorace profesního vývoje začínajících terapeutů. Práce se skládá ze tří na sobě nezávislých empirických studií zkoumajících vývoj terapeutů ve třech odlišných psychoterapeutických přístupech: humanistickém a existečním, kognitivně-behaviorálním a psychodynamickém. Jednotlivé studie měly shodně za cíl popsat interakci mezi osobními a profesními aspekty signifikatními v profesním vývoji terapeuta. Vzhledem k výzkumnému záměru celé disertační práce všechny studie používají jeden výzkumný design vycházející z metody zakotvené teorie. Respondenty v jednotlivých studiích byli čeští začínající psychoterapeuti v Gestalt přístupu, KBT a SUR. Z výsledků jednotlivých studií vyplynulo několik způsobů, jakými respondenti využívají osobní charakteristiky a zkušenosti pro vývoj svého terapeutického porozumění a profesních dovedností, a to jak během výcvikového programu tak v počátcích jejich terapeutické praxe. Napříč jednotlivými studiemi se ukázalo, že respondenti inklinovali k vytváření vlastního terapeutického stylu, u jednotlivých terapeutických směrů však byly nalezeny rozdíly v procesu, jakým ke svému stylu respondenti dozrávali. V rámci jednotlivých studií byli diskutovány implikace pro psychotherapeutickou praxi a další výzkum. Výsledky celkově poukazují na dvě klíčové implikace pro vzdělávání terapeutů: 1) potřeba explicitně pracovat s osobními aspekty terapeutů v průběhu výcviku, a 2) potřeba implementace výcvikových nástrojů, které by by podporovaly vhodnou integraci těchto aspektů do terapeutického stylu terapeuta a zároveň minimalizovaly potencionální rizika této integrace.

Abstract:

The dissertation is focused on the topic of professional development of beginning psychotherapists. Current research on professional therapist development has demonstrated that both professional and personal factors play a key role. However, several authors highlighted the lack of an understanding of the process how trainees and beginning therapists develop towards expertise. Therefore, the aim of the dissertation is an in-depth exploration of the beginning therapists professional development. The dissertation is composed of three independent empirical studies investigating the therapists development trained in three different psychotherapy approaches: humanistic and experiential, cognitive-behavioural and psychodynamic. The objective of the respective studies was to describe the interplay between personal and professional aspects significant in therapist professional development. Due to the nature of the research focus, all studies followed same research design based on principles of Grounded Theory Method. The participants were Czech beginning psychotherapists trained in Gestalt therapy, CBT and SUR (Czech traditional psychodynamic approach). The results of each study outlined several ways how participants‘ personal attributes and experiences were utilised in development of their therapeutic understanding and professional skills during the training programme and at the early stages of their practice. Across the studies, the participants tended to develop their own therapeutic style. However, differences in the process how the participants arrived to their own working style were found within each psychotherapy approach. Implications for practice and further research were discussed for each study. However, the findings overall indicate two key implications for training programmes: 1) a need of addressing the role of personal aspects explicitly during the training programmes; and 2) a need of implementation of training strategies and tools which would support appropriate integration of personal aspects into therapists‘ working style and also minimise potential risks of such an integration.
