The matters of death and dying in intensive care units

Abstract:

Cíl: Cílem předložené bakalářské práce bylo zjistit vnímání sester pracujících na jednotce intenzivní péče při péči o umírající pacienty a zemřelé. Metodika: Výzkumný soubor tvořily všeobecné sestry působící na jednotce intenzivní péče na interním oddělení v Nemocnici ve Frýdku-Místku. Respondenty výzkumu tvořily výhradně ženy. Věk účastnic ve výzkumném šetření byl v rozmezí od 24 let do 46 let. Pro šetření byla zvolena strategie kvalitativního výzkumu. Sběr dat byl realizován metodou nestandardizovaných rozhovorů v únoru a březnu roku 2019. Výsledky: Šetřením bylo zjištěno, že všeobecné sestry pečující o umírající pacienty na jednotce intenzivní péče dbají na zachování důstojnosti pacienta a eliminaci bolesti, která umírání v mnohých případech doprovází. Dosavadní práce všeobecných sester ovlivnila jejich pohled na umírání a smrt i v osobním životě. V každém jednotlivém případu se snaží o zajištění komfortu a zkvalitnění posledních dnů života pacienta. Ke splnění této úlohy je potřebný zájem o pacientova přání a potřeby, verbální i neverbální komunikace a zajištění kontaktu s rodinou a blízkými lidmi. Závěr: Smrt a umírání jsou přirozeným ukončením každého života, a proto by toto téma nemělo být opomíjeno, zejména v pomáhajících a ošetřujících profesích. Přístup všeobecných sester k umírajícím pacientům výrazným způsobem ovlivní kvalitu posledních dnů pacienta na oddělení intenzivní péče ještě před jeho odchodem. Všeobecné sestry na jednotkách intenzivní péče plní přání, potřeby a požadavky umírajících pacientů v průběhu jejich každodenní praxe.

Abstract:

Main aim: The aim of this bachelor thesis was to find out the perception of nurses working in the intensive care unit in the care of dying patients and deceased. Methods: The research group consisted of general nurses working in the intensive care unit at the internal department in the Hospital in Frýdek-Místek. The research respondents were only women. The age of participants in the research was between 24 and 46 years. For research was chosen qualitative research strategy. Data collection was realised using the method of non-standardized interviews between February and March 2019. Results: The research revealed that nurses taking care of dying patients in the intensive care unit ensure that the dignity of the patient is preserved and the pain that accompanies dying in many case is eliminated. The work of nurses in the intensive care unit to date has influenced their view of dying and death in their personal lives. In each individual case, nurses trying to ensure the comfort and quality of the last days of the patient's life. In order to fulfil this task, there is a need for interest in the patient's wishes and needs, verbal and non-verbal communication and ensuring contact with family and close people. Conclusion: Death and dying is the natural end of every living, and therefore this theme should not be neglected, especially in helping and nursing professions. The attitude of nurses to dying patients significantly influences the quality of the last days of the patient in the intensive care department before leaving. Nurses in intensive care units fulfil the wishes, needs and requirements of dying patients during their daily practice.
