The Grammatical Category of Gender in Spanish and Czech from the Perspective of Linguistic Sexism

Abstract:

In the theoretical part of this Master’s thesis we focused on the grammatical gender of nouns and we compared in which ways its conception differs in the approaches of Spanish and Czech linguists. Moreover, we studied the politically correct and gender-neutral language, its causes, initiators as well as the reasons why it is nowadays being emphasised more than before. We also stressed which linguistic methods are considered as sexist in both the Spanish and the Czech conceptions. In the following practical part we analysed and compared Spanish and Czech manuals containing basic information about politically correct and gender-neutral language and possible alternatives of current linguistic methods. Furthermore, we paid attention to specific nouns denoting professions and we examined if their female forms are available and eventually if they are accepted as grammatically correct.

Abstract:

V teoretické části diplomové práce jsme se zabývali gramatickým rodem podstatných jmen a srovnali, jakým způsobem se liší jeho pojetí španělskými a českými lingvisty. Dále jsme se věnovali tzv. politicky a genderově korektnímu jazyku; co je jeho hybatelem, z jakých důvodů je na něj v současnosti kladen důraz či jaké jazykové postupy jsou považovány jak ve španělštině, tak v češtině, za sexistické. V praktické části jsme analyzovali a srovnali španělský a český manuál obsahující základní informace o politicky a genderově korektním jazyce a možné alternativy stávajících jazykových postupů. Zaměřili jsme se také na konkrétní substantiva, která označují profese, zjistili, zda disponují ženskými tvary a jestli jsou uznány jako gramaticky správné.
