Grapevine information as a source of the climatological knowledge in the Czech Republic in the past, present and future

Abstract:

Pěstování révy vinné (Vitis vinifera L.) a vinařství v České republice je významně ovlivněno počasím. Tato disertační práce se snaží komplexně postihnout tento vztah jak v minulosti, tak i v současnosti, a na základě těchto informací i predikovat možný vývoj do budoucnosti. V minulosti byli lidé více citliví na výkyvy počasí, protože množství a kvalita úrody byla více závislá na povětrnostních podmínkách. Proto v historických pramenech nalézáme rozličné zprávy o počasí. Kromě toho i informace zdánlivě nesouvisející s počasím jako jsou například zprávy týkající se révy vinné (hlavně začátek vinobraní, kvalita, množství a cena vína), které lze využít naopak jako nepřímý indikátor pro rekonstrukci klimatických podmínek a povětrnostních jevů v minulosti. Data začátku vinobraní ze Znojma v letech 1800–1890 byla využita pro rekonstrukci teplot vzduchu v Brně s použitím lineárně regresního modelu. Pro Bzenec (1800–1890), Znojmo (1802–1845), Bohutice (1861–1912) a Velké Pavlovice (1926–1998) byly použity řady kvality vína (výborné, dobré, méně dobré, špatné) k vyjádření její závislosti na teplotě vzduchu. Propad v kvantitě a nebo ceně vína muže indikovat nějaký hydrometeorologický extrém, který postihl danou oblast. Práce se snaží objasnit vztah mezi fenofázemi révy vinné a vybranými meteorologickými charakteristikami a také je zkoumána její dynamika v kontextu současné změny klimatu. Fenologická pozorování v České republice mají dlouho tradici, ale díky změně metodiky jsou použitelná pouze pro období od roku 1984. Analýzy jsou prováděny pro stanici Velké Pavlovice, kde jsou prováděna jak fenologická, tak i klimatologická pozorování. Meteorologické charakteristiky jsou vypočteny z tzv. „technických“ řad, které jsou po kontrole kvality dat a procesu homogenizace doplněny o chybějící hodnoty. V rámci projektu EC FP6 CECILIA byla pro gridovou síť České republiky 10×10 km vypočtena budoucí teplota vzduchu pro dvě třicetiletí 2021–2050 a 2071–2100. Na základě informací získaných výzkumem vztahu fenofází a teploty vzduchu v referenčním období 1984–2007 byla provedena predikce chování révy vinné v budoucnosti. Pro výpočet nástupu fenofáze v letech 2021–2050 a 2071–2100 byly použity dvě metody. První vychází z lineárně regresního modelu stanoveného pro současné klima a druhá metoda z aktivních sum teplot nad 5 a 10°C. V referenčním období bylo zjištěna suma teploty vzduchu, která byla dosažena ke dni nástupu fenofáze a tato hodnota byla použita pro výpočet v budoucnosti.

Abstract:

Grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) cultivation in the Czech Republic is strongly influenced by the weather. This study tries to explain relationship between viticulture and climate in the past, present and, based on this knowledge, estimate possible evolution for the future. People were more sensitive to fluctuations of the weather in the past, because vine yield and quality was more dependent on the weather. This is the reason we find various information about weather in the historical records. Furthermore we can find information not related to weather such as reports about grapevine (e.g. the start date of the grape harvest, notes on wine quality and quantity, the price of wine), which can be used as proxy indicator for the reconstruction of climatic conditions and weather extremes in the past. The starting dates of grape harvests in Znojmo between years 1800 and 1890 are used for the reconstruction of April - September temperatures in Brno with application of the linear regression model. The quality of the wine (levels were: excellent, good, average and bad) from Bzenec (1800–1890), Znojmo (1802–1845), Bohutice (1861–1912) and Velké Pavlovice (1926–1998) was used to express its dependence on temperature. The decline in the quantity or price can indicate weather extremes, which affected given area. The study attempts to explain connection between selected phenophases and meteorological characteristics and their temporal dynamics in the context of present climatic change. Phenological observations in the Czech Lands have a long tradition, but due to change of the methodology are only available from the year 1984. Analyses are performed for the Velké Pavlovice station, where phenological and climatological observations are available. Meteorological characteristics are calculated from “technical” data series, which passed quality control, homogenization and were filled with missing values. Within EC FP6 CECILIA, the new temperature gridded dataset for the territory of the Czech Republic with spatial resolution of 10×10 km for two time periods 2021–2050 and 2071–2100 was created. For future estimation of the trend, grapevine phenophases and the knowledge of their relationship to temperatures in the reference period 1984–2007 were used. Two methods were used for calculations of beginning of the grapevine phenophases in the periods 2021–2050 and 2071–2100. The first method is linear regression model of the temperature, which has highest correlation with phenophases. The second method is the model of the active sums of the temperatures higher than 5°C and 10°C. In the reference period 1984–2007 the sum of the temperatures that were achieved on the starting day of the phenophase was calculated, and this value was used for the prediction.
