Milan Kundera: Ignorance

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá interpretací románu Milana Kundery Nevědění (rok vydání 2002). Vzhledem k tomu, že román nebyl přeložen do češtiny, k analýze je použit anglický překlad francouzského originálu. Dílo je podrobeno zkoumání ze stránky formální (poetika románu) i ze stránky obsahové. Cílem dílčích rozborů je ukázat, jak jsou jednotlivé úrovně románu propojeny, a jaká je jejich role ve výsledném vyznění díla. Interpretace románu odhaluje komplexnost, které je dosaženo interakcí mezi formálními složkami a příběhem díla. Práce se věnuje kompozici románu a použitému stylu, z hlediska vyprávění potom charakteru a roli vypravěče, fokalizacím a kategorii času. Jakožto hlavní tematické složky jsou v práci analyzovány tyto prvky: pojem „nostalgie“ a jeho vztah k titulnímu „nevědění“ a motiv domova a návratu, který román podrobuje kritickému zkoumání. Dále jsou analyzovány intertextuální prvky a jejich role ve výstavbě románu.

Abstract:

The thesis consists of an interpretation of Milan Kundera’s novel Ignorance (first published in 2002). Given that the novel has not been translated to Czech, the text used for analysis is the English translation of the book. Both the formal aspects and the content of the novel are examined. The aim of those analyses is to show the means by which the levels of the novel are connected and what roles they play in determining the resulting effect of the text. The interpretation of the novel reveals its complexity, provided by the interaction between the formal elements of the book and its story. The thesis is concerned with the composition of the novel and the style employed; in terms of its narration, the characteristics and purpose of the novel’s narrator, focalization and the category of time are explored. The following thematic aspects of the novel are analysed as its main elements: the notion of “nostalgia” and its relationship to the titular “ignorance” and the motive of home and return, which are both subjected to a critical reevaluation in the novel. The thesis is also concerned with the intertextual elements included in the novel and their role in its structure.
