Use of concept maps as a strategy for teaching geography at elementary schools

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá ověřením vlivu strategie konceptových map na průběh učení, pochopení vztahů a souvislostí v rámci probírané látky a na motivaci žáků základní školy. Konceptová mapa je grafické schéma, které žákům umožní snáze si vizualizovat klíčové pojmy a vazby mezi nimi. K ověření hypotéz jsem využil metod hloubkového rozhovoru s vyučujícím a experimentu s využitím pretestu a posttestu. Strategie byla aplikována v sedmé třídě základní školy ve výuce zeměpisu - konkrétně v tématu tropické deštné lesy Jižní Ameriky. Z výsledků vyplývá, že aplikace této strategie měla pozitivní vliv na pochopení souvislostí v probíraném tématu a rovněž na motivaci žáků do učení. Dále byla v experimentu efektivita strategie srovnávána s metodou pracovních listů. V experimentu však nebyl ověřen výraznější vliv strategie konceptových map na proces učení v porovnání s druhou zmíněnou metodou.

Abstract:

This thesis examines the influence of strategy of concept maps on the learning process, the understanding of relationships and connections within the subject matter, and the motivation of elementary school pupils. A concept map is a graphic diagram that enables pupils to visualize key concepts and links between them more easily. To verify the hypotheses, I used methods of interviews with the teacher and an experiment using pretests and posttest. The strategy was applied in the seventh grade of elementary school in geography lesson - specifically in the topic of tropical rainforests in South America. The results show that the integration of this strategy had a positive impact on the understanding of connections between key concepts, as well as on the motivation of pupils into learning. Furthermore, in the experiment, the effectiveness of the strategy was compared to the method of worksheets. However, the experiment did not verify the more significant influence of conceptual map strategy on the learning process compared to the latter method.
