Gapping as a Stylistic Device: Analysis of Ian McEwan's Fiction

Abstract:

Súčasná verzia dizertácie prezentuje štylistickú analýzu diskurzu postáv dvoch románov (Amsterdam (1998) a Sweet Tooth (2013)) Iana McEwana, britského autora, so zameraním na také štylistické nástroje, ktoré zahŕňajú gapping, t.j. vynechávanie/redukciu lexikálnych, gramatických alebo textových jednotiek, prípadne intervaly medzi jednotlivými časťami informácií v texte. Pozorované a analyzované štylistické nástroje obsahujú elipsu a vetné fragmenty, reťazce predstavovania a identifikácie a hybridné citácie a nepriamu reč. Výskum je zameraný na určenie toho, aké konkrétne štylistické nástroje sa vyskytujú v analyzovanom diskurze, s akými účinkami a ako sa dva vybrané romány štylisticky podobajú a líšia v rámci aspektu javu gapping („výpustka“ či „vypustenie“). Súčasná verzia práce ako nový element obsahuje kvantitatívnu analýzu, ktorá odhaľuje frekvenciu výskytu každého štylistického nástroja aplikovaného v analyzovanom diskurze, porovnáva romány z tohto hľadiska a konečne určuje hlavné faktory, ktoré potenciálne ovplyvňujú autorove štylistické rozhodnutia, ako aj podobnosti a rozdiely medzi oboma románmi. Teoretickú štruktúru tvorí hlavne Mukařovského teória o deautomatizácii textu a jej účinku na jeho uvedomenie (1964), Wilsonovo tvrdenie, že vďaka gappingu je text pre čitateľa náročnejší, ale aj Urbanovej koncept, že veľmi štylizovaná komunikácia sa zdá neprirodzenou a že zainteresovanosť čitateľa predstavuje jeho vlastnú tvorbu významu diskurzu (2013). Každý štylistický nástroj opísaný v práci podporujú úryvky z vybraných kapitol oboch románov.

Abstract:

The present version of the dissertation presents a stylistic analysis of two novels (Amsterdam (1998) and Sweet Tooth (2013)) by Ian McEwan, a British author, with the focus on such stylistic devices and patterns that involve gapping, i.e. omission/reduction of lexical, grammatical or textual units, or intervals between the individual pieces of information in the text. The observed and analyzed stylistic devices involve ellipsis and sentence fragments, introduction and identification chains and narrative gaps and hybrid forms of speech and thought presentation. The research is aimed at determining what particular stylistic devices involving gapping are applied in the discourse under analysis, with what effects and how the two selected novels compare in terms of stylistic similarities and differences in the aspect of gapping. The current version of the thesis involves a quantitative analysis which reveals the frequency of occurrence of each stylistic device applied in the discourse under analysis, comparing the two novels from this aspect and finally determining major factors that potentially influence the author’s stylistic choices and similarities and differences between the two novels. The theoretical framework is formed mainly by Mukařovský’s theory on the importance of de-automatization of the text and its effect on the consciousness of the text (1964), Wilson’s claim that gapping makes the text more challenging to the reader, but also Urbanová’s concept that highly stylized communication appers unnatural and that the involvement of the reader represents their own shaping of the meaning of discourse (2013). Each stylistic device described in the thesis is supported by excerpts from the selected chapters of the two novels.
