Posttraumatic growth in parents of children with mental retardation in relation to coping strategies

Abstract:

This work focuses on the relation between various coping strategies used by parents of children with mental retardation to adapt to the disability of their child and the posttraumatic growth they experience. In the theoretical part of the work we describe the diagnosis of mental retardation and the situation of the parents of children with mental disability. After that we introduce the topic of coping and posttraumatic growth and we summarise the information about the positive outcomes which parents of this children tend to experience. The empirical part is describing the research, which we conducted on sample of 65 mothers of children with mental retardation from Slovakia. The results prove that posttraumatic growth is part of the experience of a great number of these mothers. They experience it mostly in the areas of personal growth and appreciation of life. A positive correlation was found between posttraumatic growth and coping styles of positive reinterpretation, searching for social support, turning to religion, venting emotions and active coping. A negative correlation appeared in the cases of mental disengagement and using alcohol and drugs. Relevant demographic variables were the sex of the parent, religiosity and (probably in connection with religiosity) also the number of children in the family.

Abstract:

Táto práca sa zaoberá vzťahom rôznych druhov stratégií zvládania, ktoré rodičia detí s mentálnou retardáciou využívajú v snahe vyrovnať sa s postihnutím svojho dieťaťa a ich aktuálne vnímaným posttraumatickým rozvojom. V teoretickej časti popisujeme diagnózu mentálna retardácia a približujeme situáciu rodičov detí s mentálnym postihnutím. Ďalej sa venujeme problematike zvládania záťaže a posttraumatického rozvoja a zhŕňame poznatky o pozitívnych prínosoch vnímaných rodičmi detí s mentálnym postihnutím. Empirická časť podrobne popisuje výskum, ktorý prebehol na vzorke 65 matiek detí s mentálnou retardáciou zo Slovenska. Výsledky nášho výskumu potvrdzujú, že posttraumatický rozvoj je súčasťou skúsenosti mnohých týchto matiek. Najvyššiu mieru posttraumatického rozvoja referovali v oblastiach „úcta k životu“ a „osobný rozvoj“. S posttraumatickým rozvojom korelovali pozitívne stratégie typu pozitívna reinterpretácia, hľadanie sociálnej opory, obrat k viere, prejavenie emócií a aktívny coping. Negatívne korelácie sa vyskytli u mentálneho vzdania sa a užívania látok, ako je alkohol či lieky. Z demografických premenných bolo významné pohlavie rodiča, religionizita a pravdepodobne v súvislosti s ňou i počet detí v rodine.
