Field research of parkour subculture

Abstract:

V této práci se budu zabývat produkcí a reprodukcí sociální identity (Jenkins 2008; Hall & Jefferson 1993) traceura, což je osoba, který se věnuje parkouru. Budu sledovat, jak jednotliví členové parkourové subkultury chápou a vyjadřují svojí identitu, tj., co to znamená být traceur, jaké hodnoty, slovník, vlastnosti, styl oblékání apod. si musí člověk osvojit. S tím souvisí vstup nováčků do této subkultury/prostředí a otázka jak tento proces probíhá, např. kdo plní roli gatekeepra (Feldman, 2003 apod.). Zároveň budu sledovat, jak se tvoří symbolické hranice v rámci této subkultury/prostředí. Dále se budu zabývat tím, jak probíhá symbolický boj této subkultury s dominantní kulturou, jak se vůči ní vymezuje a to z hlediska konceptu resignifikace veřejného prostoru (Hall & Jefferson 1993). Budu využívat metodu zúčastněného pozorování, analýzu videí, které členové subkultury natáčí a zveřejňují, a také diskuzí, které probíhají na internetu.

Abstract:

In this paper, I'll examine production and reproduction of social identity (Jenkins 2008; Hall & Jefferson 1993) of a traceur, who is a person practicing parkour. I'll observe, how members of parkour subculture understand and articulate their identity. What does it mean to be the traceur, which values, vocabulary, qualities and type of clothing they must acquire, because it is connected with joining to this subculture. I'll also examine, how this process of joining the subculture works, for example who has a role of gatekeeper (Feldman, 2003 etc.). I'll observe production of symbolic borders within the subculture. In the next part, I'll present, how is this subculture's fight against dominant culture going on, how they delimit themselves against it from standpoint of resignification concept of public space (Hall & Jefferson 1993). I will use a participant observation, analysis of videos that are made and posted by members of the subculture and analysis of discussions on the Internet.
