Modern methods and approaches of spatial econometrics for modelling labour market dynamics

Abstract:

Tato práce se zaměřuje na vyhodnocení dopadů prostorové závislosti regionálních trhů práce na dynamiku těchto trhů. Centrem pozornosti bude zejména prozkoumání prostorových závislostí a zhodnocení významnosti příhraničního efektu v rámci ověření robustnosti Okunova vztahu aplikovaného na regionální trhy práce v České republice. K dosažení tohoto cíle byla získána regionální data pro Českou republiku a příhraniční regiony sousedních zemí mezi lety 2005 a 2022. Pro prozkoumání prostorových závislostí byly využity moderní metody prostorové ekonometrie. Byly odhadovány tři typy prostorových modelů: Spatial autoregressive (SAR) model, Spatial error model (SEM) a Spatially lagged exogennous variables model. Robustnosti odhadů bylo dosaženo velkým množstvím specifikací modelů a jejich odhadnutím na rozdílných časových obdobích. Odhady modelů identifikovaly významný vliv prostorového efektu přelévání mezi sousedními regiony ČR, poukazují ale také na významnost Okunova vztahu na regionálních trzích práce a na stabilní vliv příhraničních regionů na změny míry nezaměstnanosti.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on assessing the effects of spatial dependence of regional labour markets on the dynamics of these markets. In particular, the focus will be on examining spatial dependence and assessing the significance of the border effect in the context of testing the robustness of Okun's relation applied to regional labour markets in the Czech Republic. To achieve this objective, regional data were obtained for the Czech Republic and border regions of neighbouring countries between 2005 and 2022. Modern spatial econometric methods were used to investigate spatial dependencies. Three types of spatial models were estimated: Spatial autoregressive (SAR) model, Spatial error model (SEM) and Spatially lagged exogenous variables model. The robustness of the estimators was achieved by a large number of model specifications and by estimating them at different time periods. The model estimates identify a significant spatial spillover effect between neighbouring regions of the Czech Republic, but also point to the significance of Okun's relationship in regional labour markets and to the stable effect of border regions on changes in unemployment rates.
