Application of the Austrian Business Cycle Theory

Abstract:

The goal of the submitted thesis Application of the Austrian Business Cycle Theory is to find out whether the recent crisis in the United States, known as Great Recession, can be explained by Austrian Business Cycle Theory. Therefore, the first chapter is focused on theoretical background of the Austrian School and is presenting Austrian Business Cycle Theory. In the second chapter, data of US economy as well as phases of business cycle are presented. The third and very last chapter presents author’s own econometric model based on Granger’s causality, where four hypotheses connected to Austrian Business Cycle Theory are examined. The result of the empirical test showed that three of four of examined hypotheses were in accordance with the theory.

Abstract:

Cieľom bakalárskej práce Aplikácia rakúskej teórie cyklu je zistiť, či nedávna kríza, označovaná ako Veľká recesia, prebiehala v Spojených štátoch amerických v súlade s rakúskou teóriou cyklu. Prvá kapitola sa zameriava na teoretické východiská skúmanej ekonomickej školy a predstavuje rakúsku teóriu cyklu. V druhej kapitole sú predstavené dáta americkej ekonomiky a jednotlivé fázy hospodárskeho cyklu podľa rakúskej teórie. Tretia kapitola predstavuje vlastný ekonometrický model založený na Grangerových kauzalitách, v ktorom sú otestované štyri hypotézy týkajúce sa rakúskej teórie hospodárskeho cyklu. Výsledok tohto empirického testu preukázal, že tri zo štyroch skúmaných hypotéz boli v súlade s touto teóriou.
