Nonverbal items in geography textbooks as an instrument for didactical transformation

Abstract:

Disertační práce se zaměřuje na problematiku nonverbálních prvků a jejich posuzování z hlediska potenciálu napomáhat porozumění učivu u žáků. K vysvětlování problematiky je přistupováno z hlediska teorie učebnic a také prostřednictvím konceptu didaktické transformace a zprostředkovávání vzdělávacího obsahu. Cílem práce je přispět k objasnění problematiky nonverbálních prvků jako strukturní komponenty učebnice a získané poznatky využít jako východisko pro analýzu problematiky fungování nonverbálních prvků jako didaktických prostředků. Výzkumný záměr byl promítnut do dvou šetření. První výzkumné šetření bylo realizováno jako srovnávací analýza vybraných českých učebnic socio-ekonomického zeměpisu, prostřednictvím navrženého a ověřeného kategoriálního systému. Ve druhém šetření byl jako výzkumná metoda použit polostrukturovaný rozhovor. Výsledky ukázaly, že v analyzovaných učebnicích se při zprostředkovávání vzdělávacích obsahů uplatňují v převážné míře obrazové typy nonverbálních prvků. Dominantní je zastoupení fotografie. Rozdíly mezi analyzovanými učebnicemi se ukázaly také při posuzování nonverbálních prvků z hlediska míry abstraktnosti a míry výstižnosti popisku. Bylo rovněž zjištěno, že žáci hodnotí pozitivně nonverbální prvky, které objekty a jevy znázorňují realisticky, tedy tak, jak vypadají ve skutečnosti. Ukazuje se, že především pro mladší žáky je zásadní, aby nonverbální prvky byly přehledné. Ke zvyšování přehlednosti nonverbálních prvků podle žáků přispívají různá grafická zvýraznění.

Abstract:

The dissertation thesis focuses on the issue of non-verbal items and their assessment in terms of potential to support pupils’ understanding of the subject matter. The issue is explained from the perspective of the theory of textbooks and didactic concepts of transformation and mediation of educational content. The general purpose of the research was to contribute to clarifing the issue of non-verbal items as a key structural component of textbook. Gathered findings were used as the basis for the analysis of the functioning of non-verbal items as didactical instruments. The research was carried out in two investigations. The first investigation was conducted as a comparative analysis of selected Czech socio-economic geography textbooks. For this purpose a research instrument – a system of categories – was developed. In the second investigation as a research method semi-structured interview was used. The research findings showed that in the analyzed textbooks the educational content was mediated mostly by pictorial types of nonverbal items. The photography predominated in analyzed textbooks. The assessment of the degree of abstraction and the degree of caption aptness showed significant differences between the analyzed textbooks, too. It was found that students positively evaluate non-verbal items that represent objects and phenomena realistically, that is in the way they look in reality. It has been also proved that, especially for younger pupils it is essential nonverbal items to be understandable. In the opinion of the students, the degree of understandability could be increased by various forms of grahical elements and highlights.
