The Depiction of Forest in the Czech Prose in between the Years 1890 – 1940

Abstract:

Diplomová práce Obraz lesa v české próze mezi léty 1890–1940 pojednává o zobrazení lesa ve vybraných prozaických dílech českých spisovatelů. Pozornost je věnována autorům tvořícím na sklonku devatenáctého století a stejně tak autorům první poloviny století dvacátého. Náleží mezi ně K. Klostermann, V. Mrštík, J. Vrba, T. E. Tisovský, J. Hais Týnecký, J. Čapek, K. Čapek, J. Pavel a J. Hubálek. Práce nejprve představuje osobnosti spisovatelů a jejich tvorbu, v jejímž kontextu se dále soustřeďuje pouze na díla, v nichž lze nalézt přírodní tematiku, konkrétně lesní krajinu a její zobrazení. Zkoumá způsoby, jakými je nahlíženo na prostor lesa, jeho funkci v textu a vztah k autorovi. Za účelem utvoření uceleného obrazu dané problematiky je v práci rovněž zahrnuto pojetí lesa (topos lesa) v literatuře zahraniční (konkrétně americké) a obecné pojetí krajiny v české literární tvorbě.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis The Depiction of Forest in the Czech Prose between the years 1890 1940 deals with the representation of forest in chosen prosaic works of Czech writers. Attention is devoted to the authors creating at the end of 19th century and in the first half of 20th century as well. Among mentioned authors belong K. Klostermann, V. Mrštík, J. Vrba, T. E. Tisovský, J. Hais Týnecký, J. Čapek, K. Čapek, J. Pavel and J. Hubálek. The thesis introduces at first the writers’ personalities and their literary creation, in context of which it’s further focused on those works only, where the nature theme can be found, especially forest landscape and its depiction. It examines the ways in which the forest space, its function in the text and the relation to the author are viewed. For the purpose of forming a complete picture about set issues, the thesis also includes conception of the forest in foreign literature (American literature especially) and general conception of landscape in Czech literature.
