Greek-Macedonian dispute concerning the official name of the country and the Albanians in Macedonia

Abstract:

Předložená bakalářská práce se zabývá bilaterálním konfliktem mezi Řeckem a Makedonií. Tento spor vypukl po vyhlášení nezávislosti Makedonie v roce 1991 pod ústavním názvem Makedonská republika. Athény tento krok považují za zásah do vlastního národního dědictví a obviňují Makedonskou republiku z územních nároků ohledně severní řecké provincie, která též nese název Makedonie. Řecké politické a intelektuální kruhy projevily silný nesouhlas nejen ohledně ústavního názvu Makedonská republika, ale také ohledně používání antických symbolů. Kontroverze ohledně názvu Makedonie byla dočasně vyřešena v roce 1993 přijetím prozatímního názvu Bývalá jugoslávská republika Makedonie. Od roku 1991, kdy Makedonie získala nezávislost, se jejím hlavní zahraničně-politickým cílem stala integrace země do západoevropských struktur, především do NATO a EU. Nicméně, nevyřešený spor s Řeckem o název země má negativní vliv nejen na integraci Makedonské republiky do těchto organizací, ale také na mezietnické vztahy mezi etnickými Makedonci a albánskou menšinou v zemi.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis is focused on bilateral dispute between Macedonia and Greece. The dispute erupted after declaration of independence of the Federal Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia in 1991 under the name Republic of Macedonia. Athens this step identified as an encroachment on its inalienable heritage and hidden territorial claim on the north Greek province, which is also called Macedonia. The Greek intellectuals and political elites expressed a sharp disagreement about the name of the country as well as the use the ancient symbols. The difference over the name Macedonia, as a state appellation, has been resolved temporarily since 1993 by the adoption of the provisional name the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. Since 1991, when Macedonia became independent, integration with Western structures the European Union and the NATO has been its main foreign policy objective. Nevertheless, the unresolved dispute with Greece over the name of the country has negative effect on Macedonian path to EU and NATO as well as on inter-ethnic relations between ethnic Macedonians and the Albanian minority in Macedonia.
