The Position of the Fair Trade in the International System

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá pozicí Fair Trade v mezinárodním politicko-ekonomickém systému. Hlavním cílem práce je určit, zda je Fair Trade pouze formou pomoci nejméně rozvinutým zemím (rozvojovým projektem), nebo se jedná o celkovou alternativní strategii rozvoje, která má potenciál být rozšířena do dalších odvětví a zemí a významně zlepšit jejich hospodářskou situaci. Při hledání odpovědi na tuto hlavní otázku vycházím z popisu a analýzy současné pozice a vývoje Fair Trade systému, z analýzy podmínek mezinárodního obchodu, politické a ekonomické situace nejméně rozvinutých zemí a v neposlední řadě z analýzy dosavadních deklarovaných úspěchů Fair Trade v podpoře rozvoje a jeho dalšího potenciálu. Vycházíme-li z obecně rozšířené představy Fair Trade jako alternativní cesty prosazení rozvoje pro nejméně rozvinuté státy, narážíme na otázku podstaty vztahu mezi Fair Trade a moderním liberálním obchodním režimem. Zhodnocením událostí, které předcházely mezinárodnímu úspěchu Fair Trade, současné situace a vývoje by tato práce měla přinést také odpověď na otázku, zda je Fair Trade opravdu alternativou moderního liberálního obchodního režimu, jak je většinově chápán, nebo je spíše doplňkem tohoto systému.

Abstract:

This paper focuses on the position of Fair Trade in international political and economic system. The main aim of this paper is to determine, whether the Fair Trade system is only a form of help to the least developed countries (in the form of a development project), or whether it is a complex alternative strategy of development, which has the potential to be expanded to other sectors and countries, and to significantly improve their economic situation. I base the answer for this question on the description and analysis of the contemporary position of the Fair Trade system and its evolution, on the analysis of conditions of the international trade, political and economic situation of the least developed coutries and on the analysis of the previsous declared successes of Fair Trade in development support and its future potential. If we start from the widespread image of Fair Trade as an alternative way to enforce development for the least developed countries, we come across the question of the core of the relation between Fair Trade and modern liberal trade regime. The evaluation of the events that preceded the international success of Fair Trade, its present situation, and its evolution should also answer the question whether Fair Trade is a true alternative to the modern liberal economic order, as it is mainly understood, or if it is a complement to the contemporary system instead.
