Miroslav Tyrš and the Evolution of his Aesthetic Ideas and his Impact on Cultural Life in Bohemia and Moravia

Abstract:

Předkládaná diplomová práce se zabývá vývojem estetických názorů Miroslava Tyrše a vlivem jeho činnosti na českou kulturu v druhé polovině 19. století. Tyrš patřil mezi zakladatele tělocvičné jednoty Sokol, byl ale také filozof, estetik, historik umění a kritik, přičemž se všechny tyto aspekty v jeho spisech prolínají. Práce si proto klade za cíl zmapovat Tyršovo literární dílo a vývoj jeho teoretických studií týkajících se umění. V deseti chronologicky řazených kapitolách jsou rozebrány a okomentovány jeho eseje. Každá kapitola je navíc zaměřena na určité téma podle toho, čemu se Tyrš v dané době věnoval. Po životopisné části následuje oddíl, v němž budou představeny texty několika našich teoretiků a estetiků, kteří zhodnotili Tyršův myšlenkový odkaz. Na závěr je na rozličných příkladech demonstrován význam, který měl Tyrš v oblasti české kultury, v rámci sokolství i mimo něj, jehož stopy můžeme sledovat ještě dnes.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with the development of Miroslav Tyrš’s aesthetic opinions and his influence on Czech culture in the second half of the 19th century. Tyrš was one of the founders of the Sokol movement, but he was also a philosopher, aesthetician, art historian and art critic, and all these aspects are observable in his work. This thesis endeavours to map Tyrš’s literary work and the development of his theoretical studies of art. All of his essays are analysed and commented upon in ten chronological chapters. Each is focused on a special issue that interested Tyrš during that particular period. After the biographical part, the second part introduces several texts from other theoreticians and aestheticians who discuss Tyrš’s intellectual legacy. And, finally, we will demonstrate the influence that Tyrš has had on our culture with various examples, inside and outside of the Sokol movement, that we can still trace to the present day.
