Changes in the family life of non-traditional students

Abstract:

Cílem kvalitativně orientované diplomové práce je popsat, jak se navzájem ovlivňují rodinný život netradičních studentů a jejich studium. Dílčími cíli je zjistit, proč se netradiční studenti rozhodli dále studovat, z jakého důvodu zvolili kombinované studium, jak může studium působit na rodinný život a naopak rodinný život na studium, a také jaké používají techniky na slaďování rodinného života a studia. Diplomová práce využívá výsledky z 8 rozhovorů, které byly realizovány v rámci 4 partnerských párů, z nichž vždy jeden člen je netradičním studentem, který měl nejméně roční přetržku ve studiu, je starší 26 let a je zaměstnán na plný úvazek nebo pečuje o závislou osobu. Na základě analýzy rozhovorů se zrodilo několik oblastí, které jsou v životě netradičního studenta důležité. V návaznosti na rozhodnutí stát se netradičním studentem, musí respondenti začít řešit běžné životní situace podle nových potřeb a povinností. Studium není krátkodobou záležitostí, postupem času přibývá únava a netradiční studenti zjišťují nemožnost plnění všech svých závazků na 100 %. Poté je nutné rozhodovat se dle priorit a životních zkušeností. Netradiční studenti také musí hledat možnosti, které jim usnadní slaďování jejich závazků, aby jejich cesta k úspěšnému dokončení studia a získání titulu měla co nejméně překážek. V závěru diplomové práce jsou výsledky diskutovány s proběhlými výzkumnými šetřeními ze zkoumané oblasti.

Abstract:

The aim of this qualitative thesis is to describe, how the family life of non-traditional students and their studies influence each other. The partial aims are to determinate why non-traditional students decided for further studies, for what reason they have chosen combined study, how studies can affect family life and, conversely, how family life affects studies and what techniques they use to harmonize family life with studies. The thesis uses 8 interviewes, which were held out with four couples, in which always one member is non-traditional student, who had at least one year break from studiyng, is 26 years or older and is full-time employee or takes care of dependant person. Basen on the analyses of interview, four areas were indentified, which are important in life of non-traditional student. Following the decision to become a non-traditional student, respondents have to solve common life situations in accordance with their new needs and obligations. Studying is not a short-term affair, fatigue increases over time, and non-traditional students find that it is not possible to fulfill all obligations 100%. Then they have to decide by their priorities and life experiences. Non-traditional students must also find options that can make it easier for them to balance their responsibilities so that their path to successful completion of study and obtaining a degree has as few obstacles as possible. The conclusion of the thesis are the results discussed in the context of contemporary research on the topic.
