Specific Problems of Girls while Studying Programming and Ways to Solve Them

Abstract:

Navzdory snahám o zvýšení genderové diverzity v oblasti informatiky přetrvává značná genderová propast, přičemž ve vzdělávání v oblasti programování je zastoupení žen stále nedostatečné. Prostřednictvím nejen komplexního přehledu literatury a historie programování, ale i empirického kvalitativního výzkumu zahrnujícího rozhovory se studenty obou pohlaví tato bakalářská práce si klade za cil prozkoumat specifické problémy, kterým studentky vysokých škol čelí při studiu programování. Druhým cílem je poskytnout náhled na faktory, které omezují zájem dívek o studium programování. Stejně tak práce má za cíl zanalyzovat specifika týkající se dívek. Nakonec práce nabídne možné způsoby, jak těmto výzvám čelit. Zjištění této práce přispívají k rostoucímu množství literatury zaměřené na zvýšení genderové rovnosti v oblasti informatiky a STEM v širším měřítku a poskytují praktická doporučení pro pedagogy a tvůrce opatření, kteří se snaží vytvořit inkluzivnější vzdělávací prostředí pro všechny studenty.

Abstract:

Despite efforts to increase gender diversity in the field of computer science, there remains a significant gender gap, with girls and women underrepresented in programming education. Through not only a comprehensive review of the literature and history of programming, but also empirical qualitative research involving interviews with students of both genders, this thesis aims to explore the specific problems that female university students face when studying programming. The second aim is to provide insight into the factors that limit girls' interest in studying programming. Finally, the thesis will offer possible ways to address and overcome these challenges. The findings of this research contribute to a growing body of work focused on increasing gender equity in computer science and STEM fields more broadly and provide actionable recommendations for educators and policy makers seeking to create more inclusive learning environments for all students.
