Urban regeneration and flagship projects in Spain

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se bude zabývat urbánní regeneraci a vlajkovými projekty ve Španělsku. Práce se detailněji zaměří na případovou studii města Bilbao a průběh jeho přechodu z krize od konce 70. let minulého století přes třicetileté období, ve znamení městské obnovy. Na začátku teoretické části bude uvedena základní charakteristika a problémy evropských průmyslových měst, s důrazem na Západní Evropu, v rámci obecného kontextu. Následuje kapitola s urbánními politikami a příčinami jejich formování, kde bude popsáno, jak městští političtí aktéři reagovali na změny a jejich kroky k řešení. Poté se práce přesune na kapitolu o přístupech průmyslových měst k urbánní regeneraci, kde kromě evropských, budou uvedena, pro srovnání, i města severoamerická. Teoretickou část práce uzavře kapitola o přínosech a rizikách urbánní regenerace, kde bude rozebráno, co jsou vlajkové projekty, jak fungují a jaký je jejich význam pro městskou politiku ve vazbě na urbánní regeneraci. Empirická část práce začne kapitolou o případové studii města Bilbao, ve které bude obsažena geografická charakteristika problémového území, následována socioekonomickou analýzou. Tuto část uzavře kapitola o vývoji a výsledcích hlavních strategií, klíčových pro urbánní regeneraci na území Bilbaa. Navazující kapitola bude analyzovat hlavní vlajkové projekty, realizované v Bilbau. V závěru bude zhodnocena urbánní regenerace s konkrétními výsledky Bilbaa. Zhodnoceny budou dále analyzované vlajkové projekty a na příkladu z České republiky bude rozhodnuto, zda lze na ostatní průmyslová města aplikovat stejný postup, jako v případě města Bilbao.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis will deal with urban regeneration and flagship projects in Spain. The thesis will focus in more detail on the case study of Bilbao and the progress of its transition from the deindustrial crisis since the late 1970´s through a period of 30 years, in the wake of urban renewal. At the beginning of the theoretical part will be given the basic characteristics and problems of European industrial cities, with an emphasis on Western Europe, within the general context. This is followed by a chapter on urban policies and the causes of their formation, which will describe how urban political actors reacted to the changes and their actions to address them. After that, the work will move to a chapter on industrial cities' approaches to urban regeneration, where, in addition to European ones, North American cities will be listed for comparison. The theoretical part of the work will be closed by a chapter on the benefits and risks of urban regeneration, where it will be analysed, what flagship projects are, how they work and what their importance is for urban policy in connection with urban regeneration. The empirical part of the work will begin with a chapter on a case study of the city of Bilbao, which will contain the geographical characteristics of the problem area, followed by a socio-economic analysis. This section will conclude with a chapter on the development and results of the main strategies for urban regeneration in Bilbao. The following chapter will analyse the main flagship projects carried out in Bilbao. In the end, the urban regeneration will be evaluated with the specific results of Bilbao. Further analysed flagship projects will be evaluated and it will be decided on the example from the Czech Republic whether the same procedure can be applied to other industrial cities as in the case of Bilbao.
