The experience of uncertainty and other antecedents of right-wing authoritarianism at people with non-authoritarian political orientation

Abstract:

Ve stávající literatuře existují dobré empirické důkazy a teoretická vysvětlení o tom, jak se individuální způsob prožívání kognitivní (epistemické) a osobní či existenční nejistoty podílí na vzniku vysokého pravicového autoritářství. Tento výzkum se snaží replikovat zjištění o dvou zdrojích autoritářské nejistoty a prozkoumat, zda se stejná nejistota objevuje také u lidí s velmi nízkým autoritářstvím, jak by naznačovala Uncertainty-Identity Theory, nebo tito lidé vykazují velmi nízké hodnoty takové nejistoty, jak plyne z teorie „motivovaného sociálního poznávání“. Bylo zjištěno, že nástroje Need for Cognitive Closure Scale a Self-Concept Clarity Scale nezávisle na sobě predikují autoritářství a dají se považovat za výraz dvou druhů nejistoty. Nástroj Dangerous and Threatening Social World View měřící pocit ohrožení v sociálním světě navzdory teoretické příslušnosti k osobní nejistotě predikuje autoritářství mediací skrze potřebu kognitivního uzavření. Nástroj Self-Doubt Scale s autoritářstvím nijak nesouvisí. Vztah mezi nejistotou a autoritářstvím je lineární, přičemž lidé s proti-autoritářskými postoji se vyhýbají kognitivnímu uzavření, mají méně jasné sebepojetí a sociální svět vnímají jako bezpečný.

Abstract:

There is good empirical evidence and theoretical explanation in the current literature for the way individual experiencing of cognitive (epistemic) and personal or existential uncertainty participates in the formation of high right-wing authoritarianism. This present research attempts to replicate the findings of two separate sources of authoritarian uncertainty and examine whether the same kind of uncertainty can also be found in people extremely low in authoritarianism as suggested by the Incertainty-Identity Theory or if this uncertainty is extremely low in these people, consistently with the theory of “motivated social cognition”. It has been found out that the Need for Cognitive Closure Scale and the Self-Concept Clarity Scale are independent predictors of authoritarianism and can be considered as manifestations of two types of uncertainty. The Dangerous and Threatening Social World View scale, measuring the experience of threat in social environment, predicts authoritarianism through the mediation with the need for cognitive closure, despite its theoretical affiliation with personal uncertainty. The Self-Doubt Scale is unrelated to authoritarianism. The relation between uncertainty and authoritarianism is linear, people with anti-authoritarian attitudes avoiding cognitive closure, having a less-clear self-concept and perceiving the social world as safe.
