Interpretation of the Second Sino-Japanese War Based on the Analysis of Chinese History Textbooks

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce zkoumá, jak je v současných čínských učebnicích dějepisu pro vyšší střední školy interpretována druhá sino-japonská válka, která se odehrála mezi lety 1937–1945. Práce je zaměřena na zobrazení Komunistické strany Číny, Kuomintangu a jejich hlavních představitelů – Mao Zedonga a Čankajška. K zodpovězení výzkumných otázek byla použita metoda obsahové analýzy primárních zdrojů, následovala komparace se sekundární literaturou. V rámci výzkumu bylo zjištěno, že se v čínských učebnicích dějepisu pro vyšší střední školy projevuje vliv Komunistické strany Číny, ta je totiž zobrazována jako hlavní aktér čínského protijaponského boje. Tato práce ukazuje, jak Komunistická strana Číny ovlivňuje interpretaci jedné z nejdůležitějších historických událostí v moderních dějinách Číny.

Abstract:

This thesis examines how recent senior high school history textbooks from China present the period of the Second Sino-Japanese War, which took place between 1937–1945. The content analysis focuses on three main areas: the representation of the Communist Party of China, the Kuomintang and their main representatives – Mao Zedong and Chiang Kai-shek. The analysis of primary surces was compared with information in secondary literature. Findings indicate that the Chinese senior high school history textbooks are influenced by the Communist Party of China as it is depicted in the textbooks as the main actor of the China’s War of Resistance against Japan. The author of this thesis believes that the reaserch demonstrates how the Communist Party of China perceives and interprets historical events and influences the narrative of one of the most important periods of Chinese modern history.
