The effect of gamelike features on Shapebuilder working memory test performance and children's enjoyment

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá vlivem herních prvků na výkon a subjektivní prožitek dětí při měření vizuoprostorové pracovní paměti. Za tímto účelem byla dle zahraničního vzoru vytvořena nová metoda Shapebuilder a následně upravena do tří samostatných verzí. Dvě z nich byly tzv. gamifikovány pomocí elementárních herních prvků (bodového hodnocení a příběhu), třetí byla ponechána v základní (tzn. neherní) podobě jako kontrolní. Výzkum byl realizován na vzorku 141 dětí ve věku 10-12 let. Při srovnání verze bez herních prvků a obou verzí s herními prvky současně neodhalila provedená analýza rozdíl ani v podaném výkonu ani v subjektivním prožitku. Při porovnání verzí s jednotlivými herními prvky se však ukázalo, že děti podávají vyšší výkon a pozitivněji hodnotí svůj prožitek při verzi s bodovým hodnocením než při verzi s příběhem. Z výsledků výzkumu je zřejmé, že každý typ herního prvku může mít na podaný výkon i subjektivní prožitek specifický vliv, a proto by měl být jejich efekt zkoumán pokud možno odděleně.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with an influence of gamelike features on the children’s performance and enjoyment during the measurement of visual-space working memory. For this purpose, a new Shapebuilder method was created according to the foreign model and subsequently modified into three separated versions. Two of them were gamified using elementary gamelike features (score and story), the third was left in the basic (non-game) form as a control. The research was conducted on a sample of 141 children aged 10-12 years. When comparing the non-game version and both versions with the gamelike features, the analysis did not reveal the difference in either performance or enjoyment. When comparing two different versions with gamelike features, however, it turned out that children perform better and assess their experience higher with the point-based version than with the story version. According to the research results, each type of gamelike feature may have a specific influence on the children’s performance and enjoyment, so their effect should be examined separately if possible.
