First Lady Feminisms: A Case Study of Michelle Obama

Abstract:

Tato práce zkoumá vývoj role prvních dám a jejich zapojení do feministických iniciativ, přičemž zdůrazňuje výjimečnou roli Michelle Obamové a způsoby, jakými její iniciativy adresovaly hlavně (černošské) ženy. Cílem této práce je prozkoumat proč a jakým způsobem byla Michelle Obama feministka. Databáze primárně obsahuje výzkumné články, stejně jako projevy, veřejná prohlášení a biografie. Studie konstatuje, že role první dámy tradičně spočívala v reprezentaci národa, ale v poslední době se rozšířila o podporu sociálních nebo feministických iniciativ. Na rozdíl od svých předchůdkyň využila Michelle Obama své iniciativy k řešení intersekcionálního feminismu, přičemž se zaměřila na posilování zastoupení nedostatečně reprezentovaných skupin a na podporu rovnosti pohlaví. Ve vzdělávání výrazně zvýšila vzdělávací příležitosti pro dívky a dostupnost kvalitního vzdělání po celém světě. Zároveň podporovala americké studenty, zejména mladé ženy a studenty z minorit, aby usilovali o vyšší vzdělání. Obama také pomohla rozšířit přístup k zdravotní péči pro miliony Američanů, kladla důraz na preventivní péči a podporovala mateřské zdraví prostřednictvím podpory kojení a prenatální péče. Obama ukázala, jak lze platformu první dámy využít k významnému dopadu na řešení sociálních problémů, čímž stanovila nový standard pro budoucí první dámy.

Abstract:

This thesis examines the evolution of the role of the First Lady of the United States and the Frist Ladies' engagement with feminist causes, highlighting Michelle Obama's distinctive role and the ways her initiatives and efforts addressed (black) women. The aim of this work is to examine how Michelle Obama proved to be a feminist. The dataset consists primarily of research articles as well as speeches, public declarations and biographies. The study concludes that the role of the first lady had traditionally been to represent the nation but has recently expanded to support and advocate for social or feminist causes. Unlike her predecessors, Michelle Obama used her initiatives to address intersectional feminism, concentrating on empowering underrepresented groups and promoting gender equality. In education, she significantly increased educational opportunities for girls as well as accessibility to quality education worldwide. Meanwhile, she encouraged American students, particularly young women and students of colour, to pursue higher education. Obama helped expand healthcare access to millions of Americans, emphasizing preventive care and supporting maternal health through advocacy for breastfeeding and prenatal care. Her legacy illustrates how the platform of the First Lady can be leveraged to make a substantial impact on social issues, setting a new standard for future First Ladies.
