Trends in distribution of music with focus on independent music labels in Czech Republic

Abstract:

Technologický vývoj ve světe způsobuje rychlé změny v odvětvích pracujících s novými technologiemi. Takovým odvětvím je i hudební průmysl. S ohledem na vysokou proměnlivost je komplikované udržovat si přehled o jeho struktuře a aktuálních trendech. V případě nezávislého sektoru, který není příliš konsolidovaný, je to velmi složité. V České republice k mapování hudebního průmyslu dochází intenzivněji až v posledních letech. Cílem práce je k této snaze přispět a popsat aktuální situaci v tomto odvětví. S ohledem na poznatky v teoretické části, vycházející z odborné literatury, jsou v rámci praktické části formou kvalitativního výzkumu zpracovány hloubkové rozhovory s managery a pracovníky nezávislých hudebních labelů. Bylo zjištěno, že nezávislá hudební vydavatelství dokážou okolo sebe tvořit komunity lidí a přispívat k diverzitě nabídky lokální hudební scény. Významná jsou z hlediska podpory lokálních, většinou menších či středně velkých umělců. Vzhledem k odlivu peněz z odvětví musejí hledat nové zdroje financování a přizpůsobovat tomu svůj obchodní model. Vzhledem ke svému lokálnímu rozsahu nejsou nucena rychle se přizpůsobovat novým trendům. Nezávislá hudební vydavatelství vytvářejí značné množství nepřímých zaměstnání, díky čemuž pozitivně přispívají ekonomice své země.

Abstract:

Technological development in the world is causing rapid changes in industries working with new technologies, including the music industry. Given its high volatility, it is difficult to keep track of its structure and current trends. This is even more difficult in the case of an independent sector, which is not very consolidated. In the Czech Republic, the mapping of the music industry has only become more intensive in recent years. The aim of this thesis is to contribute to this effort and to describe the current situation in this sector. Based on the theoretical part, compiled on knowledge from specialized literature, in-depth interviews with managers and employees of independent music labels are conducted in the practical part in the form of qualitative research. It was found that independent music labels are able to form communities of people around them and contribute to the diversity of the local music scene. They are important in terms of supporting local, mostly smaller or medium-sized artists. Due to the outflow of money from the industry, they have to find new sources of funding and adapt their business model accordingly. Due to their local reach, they are not forced to quickly adapt to new trends. Independent music labels generate a significant amount of indirect employment, which makes a positive contribution to their country's economy.
