The effectivity and motivation during foreign language learning via computer game: The comparison with the traditional instruction

Abstract:

Práce porovnává efektivitu učebních metod při výuce slovní zásoby cizího jazyka. Formou expe-rimentu na 121 adolescentech ve věku 15 až 17 let srovnává výkon při učení se slovíček prostřed-nictvím edukační počítačové hry určené pro výuku slovíček a při tradiční třídní výuce. Zároveň zjišťuje dotazníkovým šetřením pomocí dotazníku MSLQ (Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire) motivaci žáků k učení se cizích jazyků, což následně dává do vztahu se zjištěnou učební efektivitou. Věková skupina adolescentů byla vybrána záměrně z důvodu experimentálně prokázaného poklesu motivace k učení v této vývojové fázi. Z toho důvodu si práce klade za cíl zjistit, jestli méně motivované studenty dokáže hraní edukační počítačové hry povzbudit k lepším učebním výsledkům. Vztah mezi zkoumanými motivačními komponenty a výkonem se experi-mentálně nepodařilo prokázat. Výsledky však ukazují signifikantní rozdíl v průměrech počtu za-pamatovaných slov mezi žáky učícími se slovíčka pomocí edukační počítačové hry a žáky učícími se slovíčka klasickou třídní výukou. Signifikantní rozdíl mezi průměry žáků těchto skupin je rovněž v počtu zapamatovaných slov po týdnu od učení se zadané látky.

Abstract:

This paper compares an effectivity of educational methods during foreign language vocabulary learning of 121 adolescent students aged between 15 and 17 years. This study experimentally compares performace during vocabulary learning via computer game designed for language lear-ning and traditional classroom instruction. Moreover, this study makes a survey on students‘ moti-vation in foreign languages learning and relates these findings with the found learning effectivity. The group of adolescents was chosen intentionally because of experimentally discovered decrease of their motivation to learn. Thus, the aim of this paper is to find out if playing educational compu-ter game can stimulate students less motivated in learning to have better learning outcomes. Even though there was no discovered relation between observed motivational components and learning effectivity, findings of this study show a significant diference in means of remembered words be-tween the group of students learning via computer game and students learning via traditional clas-sroom instruction. There is a significant difference between means of these groups in the number of learned words remembered after a week as well.
