Monitoring system for small computer networks

Abstract:

In the thesis we pursue possible approaches of implementation of the monitoring system for small computer networks. Chapter 1 prefaces short perspective on the introduction to the computer networks, where is remembered the classification of the networks, necessity of network administration, for we hardly found company at the present time which wouldn´t use information technologies. We described devices considered to be critical elements in networks as well, differences between using open source tools and so-called close source tools, their advantages and disadvantages. If any network device, service doesn´t work properly and the problem is not resolved on time, users could experience decreasing quality of the service availability. The function of the network is controlled by the network management which task is to notify network administrator in case of problems with unusual states in local computer networks. In Chapter 2 we analysed free accessible tools for monitoring small computer networks, such as command ping, improved tools for checking up on accessibility or professional tool PRTG Network Monitor (Paessler AG Company). In last chapter – Chapter 3, we focused on practical part of the thesis, where we described small computer network administration with PRTG Network Monitor tool. Our experiences and observations are commonplace. Some recommendations for the other users are given last of all.

Abstract:

V diplomovej práci sa venujeme možným prístupom k realizácii monitorovacieho systému pre malé počítačové siete. V kapitole 1 sme uviedli krátky pohľad do úvodu počítačových sietí, kde sme okrem iného spomenuli klasifikáciu sietí, potrebu správy siete, nakoľko v dnešnej dobe ťažko nájdeme spoločnosť, ktorá by k svojej práci nevyužívala informačné technológie. Taktiež sme opísali aké zariadenia sa považujú za kritické prvky v sieťach, rozdiely medzi použitím nástrojov s otvoreným kódom a s tzv. uzavretým kódom, ich výhody popr. nevýhody. Ak nejaké sieťové zariadenie, služba nefunguje správne a chybu sa nepodarí odstrániť včas, používatelia môžu pocítiť zníženie kvality v dostupnosti služieb. Manažment siete dohliada na správnu funkčnosť siete a jeho úlohou je, v prípade problémov, včas informovať administrátora siete o neštandardných stavoch v lokálnej počítačovej sieti. V kapitole 2 sme analyzovali voľne dostupné nástroje pre monitorovanie malých počítačových sietí počnúc príkazom ping, cez zlepšené nástroje na overenie dostupnosti a končiac profesionálnym nástrojom PRTG Network Monitor od spoločnosti Paessler AG. V poslednej kapitole 3 sme sa zamerali na praktickú časť diplomovej práce, v ktorej sme opísali správu malej počítačovej siete pomocou nástroja PRTG Network Monitor. Samozrejmosťou sú naše skúsenosti a postrehy. V závere sme uviedli odporúčania pre ostatných používateľov.
