Competing risks analysis in observational studies

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá hodnocením dat o přežití s použitím standardních neparametrických metod analýzy přežití, Kaplanova-Meierova odhadu funkce přežití a Nelsonova-Aalenova odhadu kumulativního rizika, a metod pro hodnocení kompetitivních rizik. Použitou metodou hodnotící analýzu přežití v přítomnosti kompetitivních událostí je metoda kumulativní incidence. V praktické části jsem analyzovala datový soubor pomocí Kaplanova-Meierova odhadu funkce přežití a metodou kumulativní incidence. Doložila jsem rozdíly ve výsledcích mezi oběma metodami. Moje výsledky upozorňují na nutnost použití adekvátních analytických metod data v přítomnosti kompetitivních rizik.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on survival analysis using standard nonparametric estimators, the Kaplan-Meier’s estimator and the Nelson-Aalen’s estimator, and methods for analysis of competing risks. The most frequently used method for evaluation of the competing risks is the cumulative incidence method. As an example, I have analyzed data of Czech patients diagnosed with metastatic colorectal carcinoma using Kaplan-Meier’s estimator and the cumulative incidence method. My results show differences in the estimated probabilities between these two methods. Thus, my results highlight the need for adequate methods when analyzing survival data in the presence of competing risks.
