English language acquisition through video gaming

Abstract:

The theoretical part of this bachelor's thesis focuses on the English language acquisition potential of video games. It first explores how the brain functions during language acquisition and learning and compares children's L1 acquisition to the acquisition of language while playing video games. Drawing primarily from Rod Ellises' study on motivation, Stephen Krashen's language acquisition hypotheses, and dopamine influence on the Brain, it further describes the properties of video games to each of the language proficiencies and presents examples of similar research projects guided by scientists and teachers. The practical part of the thesis focuses on the results of a conducted survey among video game players and nonplayers to determine if casual playing has a language acquisition potential similar to other means of language studying. The survey is divided into two parts, the first one dealing with a general tendency toward video games language acquisition potential. The second part goes into more detail regarding the individual respondents' behavior while playing video games, exploring the language played in, and players' further involvement with video games beyond actual playing.

Abstract:

Teoretická část práce se zaměřuje na možný potenciál osvojování anglického jazyka pomocí videoher. Nejdříve se zabývá funkcí mozku během osvojování a během učení a porovnává osvojování mateřského jazyka u dětí a osvojování jazyka během hraní videoher. Práce čerpá hlavně ze studie Roda Ellise, zaměřující se na motivaci, pěti hypotéz ohledně osvojování jazyka publikované Stephenem Krashenem a dopadem dopaminu na mozek. Dále se práce zaměřuje na jednotlivé jazykové dovednosti a to, jak jsou ovlivněny při hraní videoher. V tomto ohledu je rovněž představeno několik vědeckých studií, které popisují obdobná pozorování z pokusů, které se zabývaly účinností videoher v kontrolovaném prostředí a ve škole. Praktická část práce představuje výsledky provedeného průzkumu ohledně osvojování jazyka při běžném hraní videoher. Průzkum, kterého se zúčastnili hráči i ne hráči je rozdělen do dvou částí, kde první část, které se zúčastnili všichni dotázaní, měla za úkol zjistit, jak je obecně vnímáno osvojování jazyka při hraní videoher. Druhá část, které se zúčastnili jen hráči, se zaměřovala na individuální přístup, chování a celkové zapojení během hraní.
