Perception of Non-Native Pronunciation of English by Native Speakers

Abstract:

Cílem předkládané studie je zjistit, jak rodilí mluvčí vnímají anglickou výslovnost u cizinců. Výzkum je podložen studiem teoretické literatury sociolingvistické a fonetické. Rámec poskytují práce o posuzování osoby na základě její výslovnosti, o úloze výslovnostního vzoru pro mluvu a výuku a o tom, jak mnohoznačnou vypovídací hodnotu má výslovnost v posuzování člověka z hlediska jeho společenského postavení, vzdělání a jiných vlastností. Fonetická kapitola srovnává anglické a české suprasegmentální jevy. Výzkum samotný je uveden analýzou 26 autentických postřehů o anglické výslovnosti z úst anglicky mluvících i cizinců. Ukazují, že časté omyly, nedorozumění a frustraci způsobuje neznalost dynamiky a rytmického charakteru angličtiny ze strany Čechů, ale i neschopnost anglicky mluvících tyto potíže pochopit a zmírnit. Práce dále zpracovává videonahrávku pro potřeby tohoto výzkumu, na níž 15 studentů angličtiny, kteří čtou zadaný text a hovoří spatra. Nahrávku ohodnotilo 6 občanů z různých anglicky mluvících zemí na základě jednoduchého dotazníku s použitím sociolingvistických kritérií. Hodnocení se pak srovnávají s čistě fonetickým ohodnocením provedeným autorkou práce, specialistkou na výslovnost. Výsledky ukazují, že klíčovými faktory pro kladné posouzení člověka a srozumitelnosti jeho mluvy jsou přiměřená hlasitost a tempo promluvy. I student s ne- dokonalou výslovností je vnímán pozitivně, pokud přizpůsobí hlasitost a tempo své promluvy tak, aby byl jasně slyšet a posuchač měl čas dekódovat jeho chyby. V před- kládané studii došlo k několika přesunům mezi horší a střední skupinou mluvčích právě na základě toho, že vykazovali přiměřenou hlasitost a tempo.

Abstract:

The objective of the present study is to investigate the way non-native pronunciation of English is perceived by native speakers. A theoretical sociolinguistic and phonetic framework is provided to facilitate these investigations. The former is a research in literature to date about personality perception based on pronunciation, about the role of a model to follow in speaking and teaching and the complex of social, educational and other implications the pronunciation of English has. The latter, phonetic studies include thoughts on suprasegmental features in English as opposed to those in Czech. The research itself begins with the analysis of 26 authentic comments about English pronunciation made by speakers of English and Czech. They show that frequent misconceptions, misunderatandings and much frustration is caused by Czech learners’ ignorance of the dynamic and rhythmic structure of English as well as by English speakers’ failure to comprehend and alleviate these difficulties. The most substantial part of research involves a video recording of 15 students of English at the beginning of their studies reading and speaking off-hand. This recording is analysed by 6 assessors, speakers of different varieties of English, by means of a simple questionnaire using sociolinguistic criteria. The assessments are quantified and compared to a phonetic assessment done by the author, a specialist in pronunciation. Correlation charts by various criteria are provided. Results show that the key factors in positive personality perception and intelligibility are appropriate loudness and tempo of utterance. These factors make the difference between average and inferior speakers.
