Personality of chess players and its relation to blitz chess skill

Abstract:

Práce se zaměřuje na zjištění potenciálních odlišností v osobnostních charakteristikách šachistů, úspěšnějších v klasických (několikahodinových) nebo bleskových (několikaminutových) partiích. Sledované osobnostní charakteristiky (svědomitost, neuroticismus a extraverze) byly zjišťovány pomocí NEO-FFI osobnostního inventáře. Výzkumu se účastnilo 131 šachistů všech výkonnostních kategorií, přičemž úroveň hry jednotlivce byla prezentována koeficientem ELO, vyjadřujícím úroveň hráče v klasickém šachu, a koeficientem ELO blitz, vyjadřujícím úroveň hráče v šachu bleskovém. Hypotézy předpokládaly, že šachisté silnější v bleskových partiích (v porovnání s partiemi klasickými) dosahují vyšších skórů v oblastech svědomitosti, extraverze a neuroticismu. K testování hypotéz byl využit lineární regresní model, metoda nejmenších čtverců (OLS). Výsledky analýzy podpořily dvě ze tří testovaných hypotéz. Šachisté silnější v bleskových partiích dosahovali vyšších skórů svědomitosti a neuroticismu, než šachisté silnější v partiích klasických. Tyto výsledky byly podpořeny nejen analýzou celého výzkumného souboru, ale i souboru šachistů s výraznými rozdíly mezi ELO koeficienty. Hypotéza zkoumající extraverzi šachistů byla zamítnuta, protože všechny analyzované skupiny šachistů dosahovaly přibližně shodných skórů v této oblasti.

Abstract:

The work focuses on identifying prospective differences of chess players’ personality, more successful in classical (lasting several hours) or blitz (lasting few minutes) chess. Three personality characteristics (conscientiousness, neuroticism and extraversion) were surveyed with the NEO-FFI inventory. The research sample included 131 chess players of all skill levels. The level of individual performance in chess was presented by ELO coefficient, expressing the level of classic chess performance, and blitz ELO coefficient, expressing the level of blitz chess performance. The hypotheses assumed that stronger blitz chess players (in comparison with players stronger in classical chess) scores higher in the areas of conscientiousness, extraversion and neuroticism. The hypotheses were tested using a linear regression model, ordinary least squares (OLS) method. Results of the analyses supported two of the three tested hypotheses. Chess players stronger in blitz chess achieved higher scores in conscientiousness and neuroticism in comparison with chess players stronger in classical chess. These results were supported not only by analysing the whole research group, but also with the group of chess players with significant differences between ELO coefficients. Hypothesis examining extraversion was rejected, because all of the analysed groups of chess players achieved approximately the same score in this area.
