The functions of the modal auxiliary will in English sentences with respect to Czech

Abstract:

This thesis aims to explain what modality and related concepts mean with a special focus on the verb "will" and its possible usage regarding the Czech language. Firstly it describes the basic concepts regarding verbs and their placement in sentences. A theoretical background is built on this individual part as to how to approach the analysis of different types of verbs. The initial part also briefly explains the differentiation between different kinds of verbs - such as a full verb, auxiliary verb, and modal verb. The following part is relying on the previously explained differentiations of verbs and is attempting to explain several theoretical concepts regarding modal verbs - such as modality and mood. Afterward, the description of the function of different modal verbs is provided together with some examples of a number of specific and rare usages of them. The special focus of this part is given to the modal verb "will". The last part is the research which is concerned with providing an example of how the word "will" is translated to Czech in modal form. In this part, several assumptions made by the Czech linguist Dušková are tested as well as the general functions of "will".

Abstract:

Nejprve se práce zabývá základními pojmy týkajícími se sloves a jejich umístění ve větě. Na tomto základě se buduje teoretický rámec pro analýzu různých typů sloves. V úvodní části je také stručně vysvětlen rozdíl mezi různými druhy sloves - jako jsou slovesa plnovýznamná, pomocná slovesa a modální slovesa. Následující část navazuje na dříve vysvětlené rozdíly mezi slovesy a pokouší se objasnit několik teoretických konceptů týkajících se modálních sloves - například modalitu a modus. Poté je popsána funkce různých modálních sloves spolu s několika příklady jejich specifického a méně obvyklého použití. Zvláštní pozornost je v této části věnována modálnímu slovesu "will". Poslední část práce se zabývá výzkumem a snaží se poskytnout příklad toho, jak se slovo "will" překládá do češtiny v modálním tvaru. V této části jsou testovány některé předpoklady české lingvistky Duškové a také obecné funkce slovesa "will".
