The Genre of Corporate Homepages: Reading Multimodally

Abstract:

The diploma thesis aims at outlining multimodal analysis of bank homepages as the gateway to other pages of bank websites. Theoretical part presents the concept of multimodality, cluster and multimodal discourse analysis as multimodal approaches to the genre of corporate websites. Practical part attempts to provide a complex multimodal cluster analysis of selected bank homepages on the background of previous methodological approaches. For the purpose of the analysis a corpus comprising homepages of the leading commercial banks operating in the UK was compiled. The results of the analysis suggest how the user makes and negotiates the meanings when reading and navigating the website.

Abstract:

Cílem diplomové práce je provést multimodální analýzu domovských stránek bank jakožto vstupní brány k ostatním webovým stránkám bank. Teoretická část práce představuje pojem "multimodalita" a dále pak multimodální přístupy k žánru korporátních webových stránek: klastrovou a multimodální diskurzní analýzu. Praktická část poskytuje komplexní multimodální klastrovou analýzu vybraných domovských stránek bank na pozadí uvedených přístupů. K účelům analýzy byl sestaven korpus domovských stránek předních britských komerčních bank provozujících svou činnost ve Velké Británii. Výsledky analýzy naznačují, jak si uživatel při čtení a navigaci těchto webových stránek utváří jejich význam.
