Distance as a factor influencing foreign policy - case of Australia

Abstract:

Primary objective of the thesis is to assess influence of distance on foreign policy of Australia. There are two different conceptualizations of distance: the first part of this paper deals with distance as a force limiting ability of a state to interact with other actors, and the loss of the strength gradient concept is used to evaluate its enduring relevance. In the latter part distance is understood as a matter of location of the country - remoteness is among the most important factors creating unique strategic culture, what consequently affects behavior of Australia in its foreign policy.

Abstract:

Cieľom práce je posúdenie vplyvu vzdialenosti na zahraničnú politiku Austrálie. So vzdialenosťou je pracované v dvoch rôznych poňatiach: prvá časť diela vychádza z predstavy o vzdialenosti ako sile obmedzujúcej schopnosť štátu interagovať s ostatnými aktérmi a k zhodnoteniu pretrvania jej relevancie je využitý koncept loss of the strength gradient. V druhej časti je vzdialenosť poňatá v zmysle polohy štátu - izolovanosť sa prejavuje na špecifickej strategickej kultúre Austrálie a s dopadom na jej správanie v oblasti zahraničnej politiky.
