The resonance of beauty in an environment of the Spengler's fatalism

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se věnuje myšlenkám apokalyptické předzvěsti západní kultury analýzou vybraných uměleckých děl posledních dvaceti let. Základní idea o nevyhnutelnosti kolapsu západní civilizace a kultury vychází z knihy Oswalda Spenglera Zánik západu. Cílem práce je pokus o nalezení ostrůvků pozitivní deviace v předpokládaném, empiricky pozorovaném úpadku západní kultury – v převládajícím konzumismu, merkantilismu, umělecké vyprahlosti a povrchnosti. Metodou je komparace: stanovení etalonu uměleckých děl, jejichž hodnota je historicky potvrzena, a následné hledání současných děl, jejichž vlastnosti formální i obsahové se oněm historicky potvrzeným podobají. Případné nalezení takových děl-pramenů naděje by naznačilo, že spenglerovská teze o nutném evropském kulturním kolapsu má v oblasti umění své oponenty.

Abstract:

The bachelor's thesis deals with the ideas of the apocalyptic omen of Western culture by analyzing selected works of art of the last twenty years. The basic idea of the inevitability of the collapse of Western civilization and culture is based on Oswald Spengler's book The End of the West. The aim of the work is an attempt to find islands of positive deviation in the presumed, empirically observed decline of Western culture – in the prevailing consumerism, mercantilism, artistic aridity and superficiality. The method is a comparison: determining the standard of works of art whose value is historically confirmed, and the subsequent search for contemporary works, whose formal and content properties are similar to those historically confirmed. A possible finding of such works-sources of hope would indicate that Spengler's thesis about the necessary European cultural collapse has its opponents in the field of art.
