Blood, sweat, tears, and nail polish: Toxic masculinity and its relation to physical and mental health of men

Abstract:

Toxická maskulinita je často skloňovaným tématem ve veřejné diskuzi a v médiích, zejména v souvislosti s mužskou agresí, sexuálním a fyzickém násilí na ženách, misogynií, sexismem, nebo extremistickými skupinami. Toxická maskulinita má však dalekosáhlé a zásadní následky i na muže samotné. Cílem předkládané diplomové práce je představení negativních dopadů toxické maskulinity na fyzické i psychické zdraví jedince. První část diplomové práce je zaměřena na představení teoretických poznatků nezbytných pro úplné pochopení komplexnosti utváření, povahy i následků zmíněného fenoménu. Tato část je věnována definování pohlaví a genderu, popsání genderových rolí, utváření identity a sebepojetí jedince, a v neposlední řadě také definici maskulinity, jejích obvyklých rysů a možné toxické a destruktivní podoby. Druhou část práce představuje přehledová studie, která cílí na popsání negativních dopadů toxické maskulinity na prožívání jedince, jeho psychické i tělesné zdraví, nebo sociální vazby. Pro účely přehledové studie byla použita metoda literárního přehledu. Přehled aktuálních poznatků o dopadech toxické maskulinity na život jedince je doplněn o kazuistiku života muže, který se sám potýkal a vyrovnával s následky nezdravého pojetí vlastní maskulinity. Diplomová práce tak poskytuje podrobný, komplexní vhled do problematiky toxické maskulinity a jejích následků, aby tak podpořila pochopení fenoménu, jeho budoucí zkoumání i omezení jeho destruktivních dopadů na jednotlivce i společnost.

Abstract:

Toxic masculinity is a topic which is frequently and intensively discussed in the public discussion and the media, particularly in the context of male aggression, men’s sexual and physical violence on women, misogyny, sexism, and extremist groups. However, toxic masculinity has a far-reaching and significant consequences for men themselves. The aim of this thesis is to describe and summarize negative impact of toxic masculinity on one’s physical and mental health. The first part of the thesis focuses on introducing the theoretical framework necessary for a full understanding of the complexity, nature, and consequences of the phenomenon. This part is dedicated to defining sex and gender, describing gender roles, the process of forming one’s identity and self-concept, and, lastly, to defining masculinity, its usual traits and possible toxic and destructive nature. The second part of the thesis contains an overview of negative impact of toxic masculinity on one’s feelings, physical and mental health, and social relations. Literature review method was used for the given purpose of the review study. The state-of-the-science review of the impact of toxic masculinity on one’s life is supplemented with a case-study of a man who has a personal experience with struggling and dealing with the consequences of the unhealthy conception of his own masculinity. Thus, the thesis provides a detailed, complex insight into the issue in order to support the understanding of the phenomenon, its future research and to reduce its destructive impact on the individual and the society.
