Arthur Schopenhauer: Ethical way of redemption

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce Arthur Schopenhauer: etická cesta vykoupení se věnuje učení německého filosofa 19. století Arthura Schopenhauera. Cílem práce je zdůraznit Schopenhauerovu etickou nauku, zejména pak jeho soteriologii. Ačkoli je filosofova metafyzika přísně ateistická, vrchol jeho filosofického systému, učení o lidské spáse, se opírá o tři světová náboženství ? křesťanství, buddhismus a brahmanismus. Schopenhauer tak filosofickým způsobem a jazykem zpracoval téma, které jej provázelo celým jeho živo-tem při studiu posvátných textů východních kultur, a ke kterému jej inspirovaly životy křesťanských a staroindických světců. Ve svém díle ukazuje cestu, která vede přes rozpoznání strasti a nicotnosti lidské existence až k vědomému popření vůle v člověku a tím k trvalému vysvobození z utrpení. Arthur Schopenhauer je v bakalářské práci rovněž reflektován jako průkopník tzv. trans-kulturní nebo komparativní filosofie, pro kterou je charakteristický dialog mezi jednotlivými filosofickými tradicemi. Dílčím záměrem práce je prověřit relevanci vybraných částí Schopenhauerovy filosofie, a zejména etického učení o popření vůle k životu, s naukami, o které projevoval celoživotní zájem ? jedná se především o učení starověkých véd, buddhismus a křesťanství.

Abstract:

The bachelor´s thesis called Arthur Schopenhauer: ethical way of redemption is devoted to the teaching of Arthur Schopenhauer, a German philosopher of the 19th century. The aim of the thesis is to emphasize Schopenhauer´s ethical doctrine, particularly his soteriology. Although the philosopher´s metaphysics is strictly atheistic, the height of his philosophical system, teaching about human salvation, is based on three world religions ? Christianity, Buddhism and Brahmanism. Thus, using philosophy and its language, Schopenhauer elaborated a topic that had accompanied him throughout his entire life when studying sacred texts of Eastern cultures, a topic to which he was inspired by lives of Christian and old Hindu saints. In his work, he shows us the way which starts from the identification of suffering and pettiness of human existence, and leads to con-scious denial of will in a human being, and thus to a lasting liberation from misery. The thesis also reflects Arthur Schopenhauer as an innovator of the so-called trans-cultural or comparative philosophy, which is typical for its dialogue among individual philosophical traditions. The partial aim of this work is to examine the relevance of chosen parts of Schopenhauer´s philosophy, especially the ethical teaching on denial of will-to-live, with the doctrines that belonged to his lifelong interests ? concerning mainly the teaching of ancient Vedas, Buddhism and Christianity.
