Brno death march. Comparison of Czech and German sources

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis discusses the issue of the expulsion of German citizens from Brno after the Second World War and provides a detailed comparative analysis of the differences between the Czech and German sources tackling this topic. The thesis is inter alia amended by authentic interviews with immediate participants of Brno death march, thus Brno native with German roots, whose family enrolled to German nationality in the course of the war and was pushed to leave with other Germans CSR and further with a man, who in 1945 supervised the process of the transfer of Germans. The key points of both witnesses are subsequently compared in the text with the intention to refer to disparity of Czech and German views on postwar transfers. In the following paper the author will test two hypotheses: 1) The statistics presented in Czech and German publications dedicated to the Brno March may differ substantially. 2) The Czech and the German publications are likely to describe the events in two contrastingly different ways. The theoretical part provides the reader with the indispensable historical background for the events discussed and presents arguments which show that by no means were the repressions against the German minority isolated cases. This section will include inter alia a brief outline of the Czech-German relations starting from 1848, the Beneš decrees, the situation in Brno after 1939 and the Usti massacre.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na problematiku odsunu brněnských Němců po druhé světové válce, přičemž hlavním cílem práce je konkretizovat rozdíly mezi českými a německými zdroji, jež se danou problematikou zabývají, a to prostřednictvím jejich vzájemné komparace. Práce je mimo jiné doplněna o autentické rozhovory s přímými účastníky Brněnského pochodu smrti, tedy s brněnskou rodačkou s německými kořeny, jejíž rodina se během války přihlásila k německé národnosti a po válce byla spolu s dalšími Němci donucena ČSR opustit a dále s mužem, jenž na průběh odsunu brněnských Němců v roce 1945 dohlížel. Klíčové body ve výpovědích obou svědků jsou následně v textu porovnávány se záměrem poukázat na rozdílnost pohledu Čechů a Němců na poválečné odsuny. S ohledem na výsledky svého bádání se pak v závěrečné části bakalářské práce pokusím potvrdit, popřípadě vyvrátit níže uvedené hypotézy: 1) České a německé publikace věnující se Brněnskému pochodu smrti budou uvádět odlišné počty mrtvých a odsunutých Němců. 2) Čeští a němečtí autoři budou mít tendenci popisovat totožné události odlišným způsobem. K dokreslení událostí, jež předcházely Brněnskému pochodu smrti, je v teoretické části popsán vývoj česko-německých vztahů od roku 1848, Benešovy dekrety, situace v Brně od roku 1939 a také Ústecký masakr, který může posloužit k vytvoření povědomí, že výpady proti německému obyvatelstvu nebyly ojedinělé.
