Art of the Difference: Slovak and Czech Queer Art in Context of Art Museum

Abstract:

The Master's thesis is focused on the queer art problematics and its position in the art world. The primary interest of my thesis is to examine queer art in the context of cultural institutions. I emphasize the role and necessity of these institutions regarding the representation of artworks of the minorities – minorities which are oppressed or taboo as a result of the political or social situation. I highlight the social nature of the art galleries and their ability to legitimize artworks which are exhibited in their space. Through analysis of the exhibitions and selected Slovak and Czech artists and their work, I specify visual codes which make queer identity present in artworks. The aim of my thesis is to show that queer category in art is one of the legitimate expressions of artistic manifestation.

Abstract:

Magisterská diplomová práca je zameraná na problematiku queer umenia a jeho postavenie na umeleckej scéne. V práci sa primárne orientujem na queer umenie v kontexte galerijného a muzeálneho priestoru. Zdôrazňujem tu nevyhnutnosť týchto inštitúcií v súvislosti s prezentáciou umenia menšín, ktoré boli alebo sú z politických, alebo spoločenských dôvodov potláčané a tabuizované. Vyzdvihujem sociálnu povahu galérií a ich schopnosť legitimizovať diela, ktoré sú na ich pôde vystavené. Skúmam výstavné projekty s queer tematikou, ktoré boli zrealizované v Čechách a na Slovensku a analyzujem diela vybraných domácich autorov a autoriek. Cieľom analýzy jednotlivých diel je vymedziť a charakterizovať vizuálne kódy sprítomňujúce queer identitu. Zámerom mojej práce je snaha preukázať, že podkategória queer umenie je ďalším z množstva výtvarných prejavov, ktorý sa dostal do pozornosti na základe spoločenského vývoja.
