The fish community of West African Rivers

Abstract:

Tato práce pojednává o ichtyofauně západní Afriky, popisuje abiotické podmínky, které ovlivňují složení společenstev ryb a podává přehled studií ryb v dané oblasti. Ve výsledcích a diskuzi se zaměřuje na seznam druhů nalezených v oblasti národního parku Niokolo Koba v Senegalu a přilehlém území. Práce obsahuje seznam druhů ryb, které byly nalezeny během čtyřletého výzkumu ve středním toku Gambie, jsou zde uvedeny způsoby jejich odlovu a charakterizovány jednotlivé lokality. Seznam zahrnuje 63 druhů sladkovodních ryb v 21 čeledích a 9 řádech. Odlovy probíhaly na 21 lokalitách, přičemž na jednotlivých lokalitách bylo několik míst odběru, které se lišily typem habitatu. Podle prostředí se lokality dělí do pěti skupin: hlavní tok řeky Gambie, přítoky, menší efemérní potoky, jezera a sezónní tůně. Je možno říct, že řeka Gambie je typickou řekou súdánské podoblasti. Ve srovnání s podobně velkými řekami ve vlhčích oblastech Afriky se v ní vyskytuje méně druhů.

Abstract:

This thesis is focused on fish communitites in West African rivers, describes abiotic factors which affect structure of fish communities and gives an overview of ichthyological studies from the area. The aim of results and discussion is to present a list of species recorded in National park Niokolo Koba in Senegal and surrounding area. The thesis includes species list from a four-year research on the middle reach of the Gambia River, presents methodology of sample collection and characteristics of particular collection sites. The species list includes 63 species from 21 families and 9 orders. Sampling was conducted at 21 localities and each locality consisted of several sampling sites that differed in habitat type. Five main groups of localities may be distinguished according to habitat structure: main river channel of the Gambia River, its tributaries, small seasonal streams, oxbow lakes and temporary savannah pools. It is possible to conclude that the River Gambia is a typical river of Soudanian region. Compared to other West African rivers of similar size, especially with rivers from humid regions, it has lower species richness.
