Satanism in popular culture: Case study of the band Ghost

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na analýzu satanistického diskurzu švédské metalové skupiny Ghost. Tato hudební skupina navozuje dojem „anti-církve“, jejíž nejvýraznějším prvkem je postava frontmana – anti-papeže Papy Emerita. Členové kapely vystupují jako Bezejmenní Ghúlové, démonické bytosti v identických kostýmech s maskami, rozlišení pouze symboly pěti elementů. Na svých koncertech, které jejich fanoušci nazývají rituály, používají jak křesťanské, tak satanistické prvky, ve svých textech kritizují církev i společnost. Práce se snaží zachytit jakým způsobem skupina se satanistickými vyjádřeními pracuje jak na bázi hudby a image, tak i na úrovni dalších vyjádření členů skupiny. Analýza konceptů populární démonologie používané skupinou by pak měla přispět k pochopení užívání satanistických prvků v současné metalové subkultuře. Na daném případě se snaží rovněž analyzovat (možné) propojení metalové hudby a „temné spirituality“. Text je pojat jako případová studie satanismu v metalové hudbě a populární kultuře.

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor’s thesis is to analyze Satanic discourse of Swedish metal band Ghost. The main characteristic of the band is their image of the “anti-church“ with their distinctive frontman, who represents the anti-pope Papa Emeritus. The members of the band are called the Nameless Ghouls, devilish creatures in identical costumes with faces covered in masks, distinguishable from each other only by the symbols of the five elements. The band uses both Christian and Satanic themes on their shows, which some of the fans call “rituals“. In their lyrics they criticize the Church and the society. This thesis tries to focus on the way in which the band uses Satanic presentation both in their music and image, as well as in other statements of the band. The analysis of the concepts of popular demonology should help to understand the use of Satanic themes in current metal subculture. At the same time, the (possible) connection between metal music and dark spirituality is discussed in in this particular case. The text represents a case study of Satanism in metal music and popular culture.
