The mournful God by Milan Kundera and Jiří Kratochvil

Abstract:

Tato práce analyzuje po tematické a formální stránce dva texty z druhé poloviny dvacátého století - první povídku Milana Kundery Já truchlivý bůh a novelu Truchlivý Bůh, kterou napsal jako poctu Kunderovi brněnský spisovatel Jiří Kratochvil. První kapitola je věnována Kunderově povídce a jednotlivým motivům v ní obsažených, které Kundera dále rozvinul ve svých románech. Kapitola druhá se podrobně zabývá novelou Jiřího Kratochvila, tématem neúplné rodiny a traumatických zážitků z dětství, které se v jeho dílech často objevují, a také se snaží zjistit, zda kniha splňuje předpoklady novely svou kompozicí. Způsob, jakým oba autoři pracují s postavami fikčního světa a s vypravěčem, je obsahem kapitol 3 a 4. Závěrečná kapitola Příběh jako naděje i past přináší několik postřehů, které by mohly přispět k zodpovězení otázky, proč se Kratochvilovy knihy netěší takové oblibě jako ty Kunderovy.

Abstract:

This work analyses the thematic and formal aspects of two texts from the second half of the 20th century - Milan Kundera's first story "I, the mournful God" and a novelette "The mournful God", which was written by Jiří Kratochvil as a honour to Kundera. Firt chapter deals with Kundera's short story and its each motifs, which Kundera specified in his later novels. Chapter two devotes to Jiří Kratochvil's novelette in detail, deals with the theme of incomplete family and harrowing experiences from childhood often included in Kratochvil's works. In this chapter we are also trying to find out, if the composition corresponds with the composition of novelette. The subject of chapters 3 and 4 is the way how both writers treat with their characters and with the narrator. The final chapter "Story as a hope and trap" brings a number of perceptions, which help to understand why the Kratochvil's books aren't so popular as Kundera's novels.
