The Scandinavian jazz phenomenon: past and present

Abstract:

Tato magisterská diplomová práce se zabývá historií a vývojem jazzové hudby ve skandinávských zemích, jmenovitě v Dánsku, Finsku, Norsku a ve Švédsku. Cílem práce je zmapovat tento vývoj od druhé poloviny 19. století do současnosti, a na základě toho provést komparaci jednotlivých jazzových scén. Mezi další cíle této práce patří vysvětlení dalších specifik skandinávského jazzu, zejména role německého hudebního vydavatelství ECM, a jejich zařazení do kulturně-historického kontextu. V teoretické části je vymezen pojem Skandinávie a představena teorie glokalizace včetně aplikace této teorie na probíranou problematiku. Dále jsou zde objasněna další specifika skandinávského jazzu: severský tón, skandinávská jazzová škola a ediční koncept ECM. Druhá praktická část je zaměřena na komparaci jednotlivých jazzových scén v rámci skandinávských států.

Abstract:

This master thesis focuses on history and development of jazz music in Scandinavian countries, namely in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. The main goal of this thesis is to chart this development from the second half of the 19th century to the present day, and based on that to draw a comparison between the individual jazz scenes. Among other goals is to explain the other specifics of the Scandinavian jazz, especially the role of the German music label ECM, and to explain these specifics within a historical-cultural context. The theoretical part of this thesis defines the term Scandinavia and presents the theory of glocalisation, including the application of this theory on the discussed topic. In this part there are described other specifics of the Scandinavian jazz: the Nordic tone, the Scandinavian jazz school and the editorial concept of ECM. The second, practical part is focused on the comparison of the individual jazz scenes within Scandinavian countries.
