Social inequalities in health: case study of mexican migrants in the USA

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce „Sociální nerovnosti ve zdraví: případová studie mexických imigrantů v USA“ se zaměřuje na zdravotní nerovnosti mexických imigrantů v porovnání s většinovým obyvatelstvem v USA. Právě zdraví mexických imigrantů se totiž jeví značně rozdílné. Cílem práce je zvážit faktory, které v případě mexických imigrantů v USA mohou vysvětlit existenci pozorovaných zdravotních nerovností. Po úvodním nastínění výzkumu sociálních nerovností ve zdraví je zvážena zdravotní situace imigrantů v západních zemích. Dále jsou v práci prezentovány tři tradiční modely, které vysvětlují existenci sociálních nerovností ve zdraví: materiální, psychosociální a kulturně-behaviorální. Každý z těchto modelů se skládá z několika determinant zdraví, jež autor aplikuje v kontextu mexických imigrantů v USA. Konkrétně se jedná o přístup ke zdravotní péči, nezaměstnanost, sociální sítě a životní styl. V závěru práce autor zvažuje i další faktory, které zmíněné modely nedefinují, a to se zaměřením na genetické predispozice, selektivitu migrace a zkreslení dat. Autor také kriticky reflektuje kvalitu výzkumů, které byly v předložené práci použity.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis "Social inequalities in health: a case study of Mexican immigrants in the USA" focuses on health inequalities between Mexican immigrants and majority population in the USA. The aim is to consider the factors which, in the case of Mexican immigrants in the US, can explain the existence of observed health inequalities. After the initial outline of the research of social inequalities in health, the health situation of immigrants in Western countries is considered. Next, this thesis presents three traditional models that explain the existence of social inequalities in health: physical, psychosocial, cultural-behavioural. Each of these models consists of several determinants of health, which are applied in the context of Mexican immigrants in the USA. Specifically, the access to health care, unemployment, social networking and lifestyle are analyzed. In conclusion, the author also considers other factors with focus on genetic predisposition, the selectivity of migration and data bias. The author also critically reflects the quality of data used in the thesis.
