Struck by Hate: An Exploration of Reactions and Personal Experiences after the Bratislava Shooting

Abstract:

LGBTQ+ jedinci se bohužel i v dnešní době setkávají s nenávistnými projevy, kvůli jejich sexuální orientaci nebo genderové identitě. Extrémním případem nenávistně motivovaného násilí je incident, který se stal 12. 10. 2021 v bratislavském baru Tepláreň. Při tomto útoku přišli o život dva muži a jedna žena byla zraněna. Motivem této dvojité vraždy byla nenávist vůči zmiňované menšině, pachatel dokonce zveřejnil po útoku na sociálních sítích homofobní manifest. Cílem této práce je zkoumat prožívání a zkušenosti LGBTQ+ jedinců po zločinu z nenávisti vůči jejich menšině. K naplnění tohoto cíle jsem se rozhodla využít kvalitativní metodologii. Pomocí polostrukturovaných rozhovorů jsem získala výpovědi participantů, které jsem dále analyzovala metodou IPA. Participanti často po incidentu prožívali emoce jako vztek, smutek, strach, šok, vděčnost, zodpovědnost nebo ztráta pocitu bezpečí. Dále prožívali reakce jako změna předpokládaného světa, identifikace s obětí, vyhýbavé chování a aktivizace. Tyto výsledky se částečně shodují s předchozími studiemi. Doufám, že tato práce pomůže lidem, kteří po zmíněném útoku nebo podobném incidentu prožívají náročné emoce a pomůže jim poukázat na to, že v této situaci nejsou sami.

Abstract:

Unfortunately, LGBTQ+ individuals continue to face hate crimes today because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. An extreme case of hate-motivated violence is an incident that happened on 10/12/2021 in the Tepláreň bar in Bratislava. During this attack, two men lost their lives and one woman was injured. This double murder was motivated by hatred towards the minority mentioned above, and the perpetrator even posted a homophobic manifest on social media after the attack. The aim of this thesis is to explore the lived experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals following a hate crime against their minority. I have chosen to use a qualitative methodology to fulfil this aim. I used semi-structured interviews to obtain participants' reports, which were further analysed using the IPA method. After the incident, participants often experienced emotions such as anger, sadness, fear, shock, gratitude, responsibility or a sense of insecurity. They also experienced reactions such as a change in the assumtive world, identification with the victim, avoidance behaviour and activation. These results are partially consistent with previous studies. I hope that this work will help people who are experiencing difficult emotions after this attack or a similar incident and help to show them that they are not alone in this situation.
