Media Representation of Pregnancy in Selected Family Magazines

Abstract:

Tento text zjišťuje, jaký obraz těhotenství, porodu a těhotné ženy konstruují vybrané české časopisy pro rodinu v letech 2004 až 2007. Vedle shrnutí metodologických a teoretických východisek, do kterých je zařazena sociální konstrukce reality (Berger, Luckmann), diskurz těla, diskurz rizika (Beck), expertní diskurz (Foucault), problematika vztahu soukromého a veřejného, konceptualizaci mateřství (Badinter) a genderových sterotypů, je hlavním těžištěm práce obsahová analýza mediálních textů. Tato analýza prezentuje mediální obraz těhotenství ve vztahu k tělu, mateřství a rodině skrze koncept soukromý a veřejný. Těhotenství a porod jsou redukovány na složku biologickou (obraz těhotného těla se stává objektem zájmu vědeckého poznání reprodukce). Obraz těhotné ženy je konstruován perspektivou mateřství a mateřské role, která neuznává role další (sex, kariéra). Obraz otcovství nemá jasný ideologický koncept. Srovnání výsledků s obrazem ženy lifestylového magazínu Cosmopolitan. potvrdilo podporu stávajících genderových stereotypů, mýtu krásy a mateřství. Tím časopisy napomáhají k jejich legitimizaci. Práce také sleduje problematiku formulace článků a jejich přesvědčovací funkce. Dominují objektivní informace o těhotenství a porodu a subjektivní příběhy o mateřství.

Abstract:

This text investigates the image of pregnancy,childbirth and pregnant woman as constructed by a selected czech family magazines between the years 2004 and 2007. Apart from the summary of methodological and theoretical points including social construction of reality (Berger, Luckmann), discourse of the body, discourse of the risk (Beck), expert´s medical an institucional discourse, concept of privacy and public, conceptualisation of motherhood image (Badinter) and gender stereotypes, the focus of the work lies in content analysis of the media textes.This analysis presents an image of pregnancy in the relation with body,motherhood, and family by the concept of private and public. The pregnancy and chilbirth are reduced as a biologicals components (image of the pregnant body used by the experts like object for discovering the reproduction proces). Image of pregnant woman is constructed by the perspective of motherhood and maternity role, which doesn´t accept the others roles (sex, job). The image of fatherhood does not have a precise ideological concept. The comparison of results with the image of the woman reflected by a Cosmopolitan magazine confirmed actuals gender stereotypes, the myth of the beauty and motherhood. By this media helps to legitimase them. The work also briefly handles the issue of the wording of magazines articles to discover the persuade´s and other function. The objectives informations of pregnancy and childbirth and subjectives stories of motherhood dominates.
