Abstract:

Práce si dává za úkol prozkoumat souvislost mezi knihami o Harry Potterovi a mýtem. Vychází přitom z práce Mircea Eliada, který tvrdí, že mýty v archaických společnostech poskytovaly člověku smysluplný rámec jednání tím, že zobrazovaly archetypové vzory, a ty pak člověk mohl napodobovat. Eliade na to pak navazuje tvrzením, že s mýty se můžeme setkat i v dnešní moderní době, protože mýtus má takto pro člověka zásadní důležitost. Zvláště literatura je podle něj často nadána mytologickou funkcí. Základní argument práce je, že evropská literatura, a zvláště žánr fantasy, jsou hluboce ovlivněny křesťanskou mytologií, a že tento vliv je patrný i dnes, a to i v dílech bez explicitního náboženského sdělení. Práce tak navazuje na zjištění různých autorů, že Harry Potter nese některé vyloženě křesťanské myšlenky, a že právě toto může být v naší kultuře vycházející z křesťanské tradice jeden z důvodů, proč je Harry Potter tak úspěšný. Jeho úspěch nespočívá v tom, že by přinesl něco nového, ale v tom, že opakuje stará a známá témata, a to v nové a srozumitelné formě. V tomto případě jde o témata převzatá z formujícího mýtu Západní kultury – Evangelia. Pro dnešního sekulárního člověka, v návaznosti na Eliadeho teorii, tak příběh o Harry Potterovi může zastávat mytologickou funkci, a také to naznačuje, že ačkoliv se dnes společnost odvrací od církví, na druhou stranu to neznamená, že zavrhuje všechny křesťanské hodnoty. Souvislost mezi Harry Potterem a křesťanským mýtem je v práci demonstrována na srovnání jejich náhledů na tři témata: láska, smrt, a otázka dobra a zla.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to examine a link between the Harry Potter stories and myth. It is based on the work of Mircea Eliade who argues that myths in archaic societies provided man a meaningful frame of action, when showing him archetype models to repeat. Eliade then continues with statement that we can find myth also in this modern time, because myth has an essential importance for the man. Particularly literature is, according to him, endowed with a mythological function. The main argument of this thesis is that the European literature, and the genre of fantasy in particular, is deeply influenced by Christian mythology. This influence is apparent also nowadays in literal works without any explicit religious message. The thesis thus builds on the findings of various authors concerned with religious thoughts in Harry Potter, and argues that this could be one of the reasons for the novel's phenomenal success. Its achievement does not lie in bringing the new thoughts, but in repeating the old and well-known themes in a new and understandable form. In this case, there are present themes coming from the biggest Western-forming myth – The Gospel. Following Eliade's statements, for contemporary secular man can Harry Potter thus function as myth, and we can see, that although society turns away from the official Churches, it still appreciates the Christian values. The link between Harry Potter and Christian myth is here demonstrated on comparison of their views on three topics: love, death, and a question of good and evil.
