Spatial dimension in identity discourse: territorial belonging in rap songs from the 18th arrondissement of Paris

Abstract:

Our current work examines spatial dimension in French rap songs. The theoretical component analyses the function of space in this music genre in terms of urban socio-linguistics. Particular attention is given to the slang names of places, whether in the form of toponyms or general terms for spatial phenomena, which can be taken as evidence of increased necessity to demonstrate territorial belonging. A collection of 30 songs from three rap groups from Paris' 18th arrondisement – Scred Connexion, TSR Crew, and Flynt – has become the basis of the practical component of this study. The groups' lyrics indicated an intensity and breadth of association with their spatial environments which was examined using qualitative and quantitative statistical methods. From the results of the performed analyses we can see a strong awareness of identification with the individual parts of Paris' 18th arrondisement, the arrondisement as a whole, and Paris as a whole. The highest incidence of slang names also occurs at this scale. The notion of territorial identity is absent or occurs with negative connotation on higher geographical scales, for example in relation to France as a whole. While rappers from the Paris suburbs identify the most commonly with the number describing their particular departement, the situation in the 18th arrondisement is more varied and proves large disparities in the social character between the individual parts of Paris.

Abstract:

Práce zkoumá prostorovou dimenzi v textech francouzských rapových písní. V teoretické části analyzujeme v rámci urbánní sociolingvistiky funkci prostoru se zaměřením na zkoumaný hudební styl. Pozornost věnujeme zejména slangovému vyjádření míst, ať už v podobě toponym či obecných jmen pro prostorové jevy, která jsou pro nás důkazem zvýšené potřeby demonstrovat teritoriální příslušnost. Východiskem pro praktickou část se stal korpus složený ze 30 skladeb od tří skupin interpretů z 18. pařížského obvodu: Scred Connexion, TSR Crew a Flynt. Kvalitativní a kvantitativní srovnávací metodou pak zkoumáme jejich intenzitu a šíři vymezení vůči prostoru. Z analýz vyplývá silné identitární cítění s jednotlivými čtvrtěmi 18. obvodu, celým obvodem nebo Paříží. Na této úrovni se vyskytuje i nejvíc slangových variant. Na vyšších úrovních pak identitární vazba chybí nebo se projevuje negativně, např. Francie. Zatímco rapeři z pařížských předměstí se nejčastěji ztotožňují s číslem jejich departementů, situace v 18. okrsku je více různorodá a potvrzuje tak velké rozdíly v sociálním charakteru jednotlivých pařížských čtvrtí.
