Regency Era culture versus Modern Indian culture: A Study through Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice and Persuasion and Uzma Jalaluddin’s Ayesha at Last

Abstract:

Regentská éra měla velmi definovanou kulturu, která se lišila od mnoha našich dnešních kultur. V této práci bych ráda analyzovala a porovnala společenské konstrukty regentské Anglie, jak jsou zobrazeny v románech Jane Austenové Pýcha a předsudek a Přesvědčování, se současnou krajinou indické kultury prostřednictvím knihy Uzmy Jalaluddinové Ayesha at Last a obecným kulturním pozorováním. S využitím příběhů Austenové jako objektivu prozkoumáme složitost společenských struktur regentské Anglie, sociální mobilitu, genderové role, manželské praktiky a etické normy, stejně jako to, jak se liší od současné indické společnosti. Použiji textovou analýzu a kulturní pozorování, abych porovnala, jak se témata a společenské standardy Austenové propojují nebo kontrastují se současnou indickou kulturou.S využitím Hofstedeho teorie mezikulturní dimenze budu analyzovat a porovnávat kulturu regentství a kulturu indickou. Jeho myšlenky navrhly 4 dimenze, vedle kterých lze studovat kulturní hodnoty. V této srovnávací studii poukážu na kulturní změny a adaptace, ke kterým v průběhu času došlo.Multidisciplinárním přístupem s využitím literární analýzy, společenského pohledu a kulturního pozorování se snažím osvětlit podobnosti a rozdíly mezi těmito dvěma kulturami a vysvětlit vztah mezi společenskými pravidly, genderovými rolemi a tradičními hodnotami, které v obou kulturách existují. Zaměřím se na to, jak se tyto hodnoty mění v rozvíjející se společnosti, která se stále více globalizuje.

Abstract:

The Regency Era had a very defined culture that differed from many of our cultures today. In this thesis, I would like to analyse and compare the societal constructs of Regency England, as depicted in Jane Austen's novels Pride and Prejudice and Persuasion against the contemporary landscape of Indian culture through Uzma Jalaluddin’s Ayesha at Last and general cultural observation. Using Austen's narratives as a lens, we will examine the intricacies of Regency England's societal structures, social mobility, gender roles, marital practices and ethical standards, as well as how they differ from contemporary Indian society. I'll use textual analysis and cultural observation to compare how Austen's themes and societal standards connect or contrast with present Indian culture. Using Hofstede’s cross-cultural dimension theory, I will analyse and compare the Regency culture and Indian culture. His ideas suggested 4 dimensions adjacent to which cultural values can be studied. With this comparative study, I’ll highlight the cultural changes and adaptations that have taken place over time. By taking a multidisciplinary approach using literary analysis, society’s viewpoint and cultural observation, I aim to illuminate the similarities and differences between these two cultures and explain the relationship between societal rules, gender roles and traditional values that exist in the two cultures. I'll focus on how these values shift in a developing society that is becoming increasingly globalised.
