Changes in the properties of lime putty after freezing. Restoration of the sgraffito depicting "The Abduction of Helen of Troy" at Litomyšl Castle.

Abstract:

Diplomová práce představuje zkoumání změn vlastností vápenné kaše po zmrznutí a restaurování výjevu Únos Heleny Trójské na sgrafitové fasádě na zámku v Litomyšli. První část práce byla zaměřena na zkoumání vápenné kaše připravené přímo z páleného vápna a vápenné kaše z vápenného hydrátu poté, co projdou procesem mrznutí. Za tímto účelem byl proveden experiment, v rámci kterého byly vzorky vápenných kaší vystaveny různým podmínkám mrznutí v klimatické komoře. V další fázi byly na promrzlých vápenných kaších provedeny experimenty za účelem zjištění, do jaké míry se liší jejich vlastnosti proti referenčním vzorkům. Z promrzlých vápenných kaší byly rovněž umíchány malty. Ty byly podrobeny dalším analýzám s cílem zjistit, jestli by byly vhodné pro použití v praxi. Druhá část diplomové práce byla zaměřena na restaurování výjevu Únos Heleny Trójské na sgrafitové fasádě na zámku v Litomyšli. Jednalo se konkrétně o pravou část výjevu. Nejdříve byl proveden uměleckohistorický a restaurátorský průzkum, na jejichž základě byla dále stanovena koncepce restaurování. Následně bylo přistoupeno k restaurátorskému zásahu. Veškeré provedené práce byly fotograficky dokumentovány a byla zhotovena restaurátorská dokumentace včetně grafických zákresů.

Abstract:

The thesis presents a research of changes in the properties of lime putty after freezing and the restoration of the scene The Abduction of Helen of Troy on the sgraffito façade at the Litomyšl Castle. The first part of the thesis was focused on examining lime putty made directly from quicklime and hydrated lime after undergoing the freezing process. For this purpose, an experiment was conducted in which samples of lime putty were exposed to various freezing conditions in the climatic chamber. The study compared differences in the properties of samples frozen in open versus closed containers, as well as samples subjected to single or multiple freeze cycles. In the next phase, experiments were performed on the frozen lime putties to determine the extent of property changes compared to reference samples. Mortars were also mixed from the frozen lime putties and subjected to further analyses to assess their suitability for practical use. The second part of the thesis was focused on the restoration of the scene The Abduction of Helen of Troy on the sgraffito façade at Litomyšl Castle, specifically the right section of the scene. An arthistorical and conservation survey were first carried out, based on which the restoration concept was developed. Restoration work then proceeded accordingly. All activities were thoroughly documented photographically, and conservation documentation, including graphic drawings, was prepared.
