Adolescents' mental health in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic and social media usage

Abstract:

Mezi závažné negativní dopady pandemie covid-19 se řadí také ohrožení psychického zdraví, a to především u dětí a dospívajících. Ti totiž zatím nemají vyvinuté copingové strategie, které by jim pomohly vypořádat se s náročnou stresovou situací, jakou pandemie je. V průběhu dospívání je navíc zcela zásadní kontakt s vrstevníky, který ovlivňuje úspěšný socio-emoční vývoj. Tento kontakt byl z důvodů vládních nařízení majících za cíl zabránit šíření viru značně omezen. I proto se podle zahraničních výzkumů mezi adolescenty zvýšila doba strávená na sociálních sítích. Sběr dat proběhl v červnu 2021 mezi studenty oslovených základních a středních škol. K tomuto účelu bylo využito online dotazníku, který se skládal z upravené škály Brief Coping Scale a Stupnice hodnocení psychického zdraví. Ukázalo se, že adolescenti v období pandemie subjektivně častěji využívají sociální sítě, nicméně vztah mezi využíváním sociálních sítí a psychickým zdravím potvrzen nebyl. Dále se ukázalo, že většina respondentů vykazuje psychické obtíže. Výsledky této korelační studie přispívají k poznání o vztahu mezi psychickým zdravím a sociálními sítěmi.

Abstract:

Impaired mental health is one of the serious negative repercussions of the Covid-19 pandemic, especially in the case of children and adolescents. Due to the fact that adolescents’ coping strategies are still in the forming stage, this age bracket specifically struggles with difficulties in coping and increased stress levels in the context of a pandemic. In addition, contact with peers is essential during adolescence in the context of social-emotional development. Such contact has been limited due to government regulations preventing the spread of the virus. According to international research, this might be an explanation for increased time spent on social media networks among adolescents. Data for this study was collected in June 2021 among students of the addressed elementary and high schools. For this purpose, an online questionnaire was used, consisting of a modified Brief Coping Scale and a Mental Health Assessment Scale. According to the findings, adolescents use social networks more often during pandemics. However, the relationship between the usage of social media networks and mental health has not been confirmed. It was also found out that most of the respondents manifest mental health impairments. The results of this correlation study contribute to the knowledge about the relationship between mental health and social media networks.
